Nobody EVER said “OFF LABEL” about their cavalier forcing of “terb & Mag” on me and a ward full of mothers….
I was NOT too pre-term to give birth– delay was STUPID….they made me take terb for weeks… IV’s of terb & mag at 3 times the normal dose….
I was too weak to give birth— emergency C-section….
Kapiolani Hospital for Women & Children in Honolulu, in 1995.
My child has significant disabilities– autism– our lives have been hell. She is 18.

I was given the drug while pregnant with my twins in 1999. I was injected with it several times as well as prescribed the drug in prescription form. I would like for your firm to please mail me any information you have about collecting damages. I believe at one point I may have experienced a heart attack or heart trauma due to the jealous used of this medication upon medical order.

Sincerely,

When I first went into preterm labor I was given Terbutaline injections. The injections didn’t work so I was prescribed a pump that dispersed the same medication for 6 to 8 weeks. My son was born in 1991 at full-time. He was born with an enlarged heart. His school years were filled with frustration and disappointment due to a learning disability. The schools he attended did a lot of testing but they couldn’t figure out exactly what the problem was. If you are contemplating a class-action suit please let me know if I can be part of it. I am in the process of receiving records from the schools, his doctor and my OBGYN. Linda Smith

I was given Brethine in 1996 when I was pregnant with my identical twin daughters. The doctor told me to take these pills to stop early labor. The end result, at 32 weeks I was admitted to the hospital for emergency C-section because one twin was deceased (I actually felt her body go limp inside of me weeks before) and my doctor couldn’t be reached at the time I had sonogram to my trip to hospital. I was in shock, to say the least. I found out that she had an enlarged heart and her identical twin, now 19, had spots on her legs. Anyway, my daughter, had processing problems in school and they said she had ADD. At age 16 she was diagnosed with a mood and anxiety disorder. Can you please send me any and all information on how to sue the doctor for damages? I was told I couldn’t and for 19 years I have missed my other daughter and visit her grave often. I feel my other daughter is a loner because she is missing her other half. They were mirror image and shared the same sack. The other physicians called in to assist told me they were amazed as they cut me open and saw the living twin trying to pump blood over to her deceased sister. Appreciate any help you can give me.

I was given a terbutelin pump at around 18-20 weeks of my pregnancy for prevention of preterm labor. I had bleeding, fever and complete collapse in labor and needed emergecy c-section. My son was diagnosed with PDD, NLD, autism spectrum. The early years were very difficult. Asking my doctor if this med was the cause, I received an emphatic no. Now he is 23 and I am researching. Although he is much better, his quality of life and school experience was not good. It effected our whole family. Is there any recourse at this time?

I was put on Terbutaline at 26 weeks and continued dosage regimen until son was born 4 weeks early. At 17 he has high IQ, is a brilliant musician and academic student when he can think straight. His whole life he suffers with mental illness, Dysgraphia, depression, and anxieties: social, performance, avoidance. His isolation is now so severe he’s becoming Agoraphobic. He has been misdiagnosed so many times and way too many ADD stimulants shoved at him from ignorant Psychologists! Has been forced out of high school because the school administrations, district, and state Education system, have absolutely no idea how to help students with mental illness, regardless of 504 and/or IEP. Something has to ‘give’ for this kid! The only rational research I can find is from Duke University, but you need a PHd to decipher it. HELP!!

I went into preterm labor at aprox. 34 weeks was given meds thru IV to stop labor. I am not sure what that drug was in the IV but was sent home with a prescription for brethine and was told to take every four hours around the clock I did so for 5 weeks until I gave birth to my daughter at 37 weeks. She was jaundice at birth, She stopped breathing at 1 week old to point the point I called 911 she was breathing once they arrived but looking back it may have been complications due to me taking brethine she did not sleep or eat very well but babys are all different so fast forward to toddler years she was very distant and very defiant and active. Once she started school she had great difficulties paying attention and stuggled with many simple tasks in school by the time she was in second grade I did take her to a phyciatrist and gave me a prescription for rispedone which is for phycotic episodes and this was after the doctor spoke to her for two minutes I chose not to give her medication but thru counselor and staff at school went thru meeting and testing we decided to hold her back she did better thru grade school I am sure they would have but her on meds if I had taken her back to a doctor but we managed. Once she hit middle school she was completely defiant and out of control very disruptive in school and at home getting suspended from school multiple times and I was getting calls at least once a week for her behavior. I finally broke down took her to a behavioral center and had her evaluated she was diagnosed with adhd and opisitional defiance disorder and given different meds that just seemed to numb her not make anything better, thru all this time I did have her in counseling also She also was very depressed and started messing with drugs and alcohol she was in and out of many different alternative schools and finally she quit school she has severe anxiety has never had a real job she works with her father and has many episodes of I don’t know what but she is in serious need of some help and now that she is twenty I have no control over her she has no health insurance and has had to go to ER two times with such severe panic attacks her father thought she was having a hard attack. I have been racking my brain over all of this and I am thinking it could all be a result of me taking brethine while in premature labor . I have been living these years just hoping this is something my daughter would grow out of but she is just getting worse. And her behavior is getting more dangerous and out of control I don’t know where to turn

I was given this drug in 1987 for president term labor. My daughter was born with several birth defects. She died at four months from a heart attack. I asked about a law suit a while after her death but was told there was no basis. Is there still a chance to make these people pay for the loss of my child? It won’t bring her back but it tell them to be more careful in the future. I also experienced breathing problems during my pregnancy.

In 2003 I was in preterm labor and given Terbutaline. My son is now almost 12. He was born at 37 weeks and has Autism. No other Autism in the family. I remember asking many many doctors if there was any link to the medications taken during my preterm labor. Always told no. Is there anyone who can provide me with information on what is being done with these cases. Thanks.

In 2008 I was in preterm labor & prescribed Terbutaline. (pump infusion) I was on Turbutaline from 20 weeks-37 weeks & thankfully my daughter was healthy at birth. Life changed for us when my daughter turned 3. She is now 7 & dealing with APD, SPD, possible dyslexia, has trouble with memory, comprehension, reading & writing. I always knew something was “different” but all her teachers said she didn’t have any learning disabilities. I am so happy we finally know what LD’s she has & now we are fighting the school district for services. I have done extensive research on Terbutaline & how it affects brain development in the second/third trimester of pregnancy. It is now known a patient should not be on Terbutaline more then 48 hours or not at all. I reached out to a Dr. at Duke University since he had done numerous studies on Terbutaline & he has proven this drug affects the brains development.

I am so thankful I have my daughter but very upset I wasn’t provided all the facts/information on Terbutaline. I was never made aware Terbutaline crosses the placenta & could affect my daughters brain & heart development. I can’t say if I would have denied taking the drug since it took us 8 years to have a successful pregnancy. Maybe I would have taken the chance since I didn’t want to lose my baby at 20 weeks. The fact I didn’t have a choice or provided Terbutaline facts is neglect & even though the FDA reclassified this drug & has added a black label to the box hasn’t stopped Dr. prescribing the drug for preterm labor.

I hope my information will help or at least provide some knowledge on Terbutaline. Please keep me posted if a law suit is filed. Thank you!

In 1996 was prescribed Brethine to be taken every 4 hours. It was also administered via IV at the ER on numerous occasions. I eventually gave birth at 36 weeks. I’m experiencing a lot of the same issues with my child as others on this blog. What’s the statue of limitation to submit a claim in NY?

I was given both an IV and oral terbutaline in 1982 to prevent preterm labor. My adult son has had behavioral/emotional problems since he was a toddler. He hasn’t been able to finish schooling or hold down a job. We have spent thousands of dollars for counseling to try and help him. He can’t handle life! How can we be helped???? I know that this drug was the cause!

I was given IV Tributaline in 1995 when I had pre term contractions at 27 weeks pregnant with my son. I was prescribed oral tablets of this drug on discharge and told to take them around the clock every 3 hours. It was hell for me. The med made my heart race and caused severe anxiety and insomnia. I felt like I was ‘speeding ” I stopped taking against medical advice due to side effects. I had my son 5 weeks early. He was extremely colick. He screamed non stop 24/7. He could not feed/constantly vomited his food. He had sensory disorder. He couldn’t be comforted…hated baths, touching, cold, heat… He was seen bi weekly in pediatrician’s office for months as well as 9 emergency visits and admissions up to 6 months of age. He was a difficult toddler, hyper and impulsive. He had social difficulties and was diagnosed with ADHD. later years in school he was referred to as “uncooperative and difficult” He was depressed and had ODD. He began using marijuana and ultimately dropped out of high school. He is now 19 yrs old and I am trying to understand why he has personality/mood disorder. he has had trouble with police (shoplifting) and has depression and rage issues. I am devastated. I have 3 other children with whom I had pre term labor with…however I did not take ANY Tributaline to stop labor with them. I had two of them at 34/37 weeks and the last one at 38 weeks. None of my other 3 children have any neuro psych disorders! They are all thriving in school and with interpersonal relationships. I suffered with severe post pardon depression only after my first son was born and had to be hospitalized for it. I am convinced and always have been that Tributaline was the cause. I brought it up throughout the years to all the Dr.’s but no one would ever say anything about this drug having anything to do with the situation. Only now because I see my son at 19 getting worse…and I am seeing that there is a definite concern/connection with tributaline usage! This isn’t going to cure my son but it would be such a relief to understand what happened to him. please keep me updated on this subject. Thank you

As I read all 17 comments listed above, I began to cry. I was given Brithine at week 32. I went into preterm labor. I was given this medication until I delivered my son. I was not able to deliver him by myself so he was removed via forcepts by the doctor. I remember he was shaking and quivering when he was being examined. I had also had heart racing, palpitations , and nervousness while I was taking Terbulatine/Brethine He had colick when he was bon. He cried for months. He had learning disabilities in school. No one did not know anything was wrong with my son but I did. My son is 20 years old. I have been through counseling with him. He has been diagnosed with ADD, Depression. learning disabilities. He was put on a antidepressant and then got too smart as he
looked up all the side effects of the drugs and refused to take them. He got worse and worse and finally quit school at 17 due to he was a unable to do the school work. He was on a slow tract. He just could not comprehend math, English and would come home crying. I cried too. My son’s dad left when he was 4 due to he could not stand the constant noise my son made. His dad would only get my daughter on most visitations due to them both together was too much he said. My daughter is 2nd in her class with straight A’s. I have lived in hell for several years. I have watched my son get worse. He has anxiety/panic attacks, no friends, can’t work, cant drive. I am making him see a Psychiatrist for a evaluation and a medical doctor to draw labs. I have no life, he has no life, refuses to leave the house except on occasion for a few minutes and has gotten suicidal at times. If the lawsuit is still ongoing, please notify me, cause no one should have to go through what my son and my family have gone through. I just pray that I can get him some kind of help so he can have a little quality of life.

My mother was given ritodrine to stop my preterm birth, i was double breach. I have had tachacardia, essential tremor with cognitive defect. Adhd. I am wondering if this lawsuit is still active. My mothers heart also stopped while in labor. While a child i would stop breathing, didnt walk or talk till after i was 1 or later. Growing up had problems with impulse control and add. She was given this med in 1981 and just recently looked up the med and saw this. Thank you and look forward to hearing from you.

I was on the Terbutaline pump for 3 months when pregnant with my son in 1999. They didn’t inform me of the horrible consequences/side effects. My son is now 16 and had an MRI done that showed an enlarged hypothalamus. He has ADD, depression and was recently diagnosed with MR. No one in my family has MR. A few years ago his motor skills and life skills became slower and slower and it was like living with a half alive person. He has no energy, admitted to depression and that he couldn’t concentrate at all in school — has bad grades and no friends. No social skills. My spouse and I will try to move forward with this settlement. My son deserves some type of help for his poor quality of life.

Unlike most of the other comments I was given Brethine tablets to take for Asthma difficulties before, during and after both of my pregnancies starting in 1987. So my sons had this in their systems during the complete pregnancies. At no time did anyone say anything about warnings. The only warning I was giving was that I would probably not go into labor due to the Brethine and I did not I was induced with both pregnancies. My sons have struggled from childhood to adulthood with learning disabilites and cooping with day to day live. I understand the issue with Premature labor but what about us mothers who took the medication for more then just the term of pregnancy? Myself and my children deal with depression and anxiaty. I would like someone to help us understand how to deal with this and give us answers to why this drug is still on the market.

I was on IV terbutaline for a month in 1992 due to pre term labor. Our son is now 23 and will never be able to live on his own due to cognitive learning skills, motor skills, etc.
I feel this was due to the terbutaline has anybody found any attorneys in California that will take on these cases for these children/adults that will never be able to be on their own.

I just found this out from my mother. She was put on Terbutaline to stop preterm labor on the 7th month of pregnancy until the very end with me and i was diagnosed with epilepsy but they are still unknown of the cause and still doing testing to this day and ill be 22 in February. I have seizures at least once a day (when sleeping) and just had one on new years eve while at the gym(thank god my boyfriend was there) and i fell on my face and puked twice. This isn’t the first time this has happened. Let me know what you think!

I was put on continuous subcutaneous administration of terbutaline sulfate in my third trimester, I was told it would help to mature my childs lungs faster in case she was born pre maturely.I had terbutaline pumping in me 24/7 for 6weeks.Than I was given an oral tablet of BRETHINE for the final 25days.although I had minor side effects(that I know of), my daughter suffers most. Almost dying after delivery,Put in ICU for 10days. Servere itchy skin, burning itchy eyes, peanut and other allergies, She was recently hospitalized and almost died again because she now has a rare neurological disorder associated with OCD. There is no family history of these things.

I went into preterm labor with my daughter at 26 weeks. I was put on continuous catheter injection of terbuteline. I had increased heart rate and felt as if my esophagus was on fire all day long. I was able to carry her full term and she was born at 37 weeks. I didn’t have any problems during delivery. She had colic. She is 9 now and just now getting diagnosed with epilepsy, migraines, cyclic vomiting syndrome, executive function disorder, ADHD, and a learning disability. To say the last 5 years have been a nightmare is a huge understatement. I can’t even begin to tell you how horrible our life is with her sick and it affects the entire family. My other two kids are completely healthy and have no problems in school. To read other people’s stories in similar circumstances is heartbreaking. Please give me any information you can.

My son is 6 years old I was on a pump for 7 weeks. He is very high IQ, but struggles with behavioral issues in school. He does not have add or adhd but, does have mild sensory disorders as well as slight speech delays. He has also, started hitting himself. I am absolutely sick to think that a medication I took in pregnancy could have hurt my child for the rest of his life. When I was first put on the pump I was asked my DR about the possible side effects and he assured me that my concerns were unfounded.

I am really terrified that I have done something which will negatively impact the rest of his life.

I believe I might have also had terbutaline shoots on 2 occasions.I was only 21 at the time and never informed of any possible side effects from the medicine. I was prescribed Terbutaline and bed rest at around 26 weeks with my first son in 1992. I was taking it daily in pill form, and he was born at about 34 weeks. He has suffered all of his life with high levels (sometimes incapacitating) of anxiety, insomnia, adhd, depression, and bipolar. He struggles to be independent as an adult due to anxiety and depression. I had a friend mention that Terbutaline is now limited to 72 hours of use due to problems that it can cause in mothers and their children.

I have been suspecting my pre-term labor terbutaline prescription and dosage of meds 24/7 every 3 hours for over 14 weeks during my pregnancy in 1999 as the cause for my daughter’s neurological, emotional, behavioral, food allergy, failure to thrive, migraines, degenerative spine, Scheuermann’s disease, anxiety, phobias, insomnia, delayed gross motor development, social delay, anger issues, and Autism..to name a few. Yes, this off label use of the medication given to me during that frightening pre-term labor may have allowed my daughter to reach her due date, but at what cost? The financial costs of having a child born with so many medical issues is astronomical. The guilt I feel because I stole her quality of life and she suffers immensely every single day of her life, because doctors and pharmaceutical companies told me to take a drug that was not FDA approved and did not disclose this information to me, is beyond financial measure.
Since entering the 6th grade, my daughter has not successfully completed an academic semester of school. She has attended over 14 learning institutions during these 5 years. She has been told that she is never going to be an independent, functioning member of society. That this world has no place for her and that no one can medically help her be free of pain. At 16 years old, her spine looks like a spine of an arthritic 65 year old. Her daily headaches keep her from attending school. She will probably never drive a car. She can’t cook for herself, shop, manage finances, function without her mom. Her father left, I’m a single mom. I didn’t or couldn’t work for 5 years while she moved from school to school, either being kicked out for low attendance or moved into and out of home school situations because of her health and neurological issues. I have never taken a penny of government financial support for us. Having financial compensation now, to be able to provide for my daughter’s physical and mental health for the rest of her life, would allow us to at least have one less heavy burden.
Thankfully, future babies will not have to suffer a life filled with Terbutaline caused agony. Parents won’t be forced to live with the knowledge that they swallowed pills every 3hours for months, that destroyed their unborn child’s brain development. I did everything right when I was pregnant with her. I took folic acid, ate healthy food, no chocolate or caffeine. I slept, exercised, read parenting books, even had other people paint her room so that I was not exposing her to the fumes. But, it was not going to make a difference, Terbutaline made sure of that. I had no one telling me that what I was taking as a perscribed medication was going to take away her quality of life.
Yes, I would like information on how to join forces and send a message to pharmaceutical companies, doctors, and the FDA about the dangers of prescribing a medication to a pregnant woman without full disclosure and without proper testing and approval.

At 32 weeks I started having even contractions. I was prescribed by my doctor the oral terbutaline oral medication. At 34 weeks I went into a seizure. No past history of seizures. 2 days of being in the hospital and lots of test the doctor decided an emergency C-section would be best. I was on a very healthy diet, I craved fruits and vegetables. Medication was taken on time every time as prescribed. My son is 9 now, I have a 6 and 7 year old as well. He is showing a lot more learning issues and difficulties than his younger siblings. After my C-section I was advised I would always have to give birth by that method and not naturally. Saddening. I was also advised that I would have to be tied up after my third child because the more chidren I have I am taking chances of busting open. Very saddening. The worse part is the sensation I lost because of nerves being damaged during 3 surgeries. I feel like 1 bottle of pills created a ripple/domino effect. I am 27 now, I had just turned 18 At time of first birth.

Good Morning. I would appreciate information regarding this potential law suit. In my first pregnancy, I was placed on oral Brethine for preterm labor at 19 weeks. I continued the oral Brethine every 4 hours for 15 weeks of my pregnancy. My son is now 15 years old and has neuro-cognitive impairments, anxiety, depression, chronic migraines (for 7 years already), social anxiety etc. He has difficulty performing in school.
In my second pregnancy, I did not suffer from preterm labor, therefore I did not take oral Brethine. My 11 year old daughter does NOT suffer from ANY medical impairments that I have listed above. Please keep me posted!

I was given oral Terbutaline for months in 2008/2009, before my son was born at 33 weeks. He is now 7 and has significant speech issues, fine motor delay, learning difficulties, movement disorder (possibly Tourette’s), has syringomyelia (cyst in his spinal cord), and suffered through seizures now resolved. My other two children were also born preterm and do not have these issues, but I was also only given magnesium with my other two.

I was told at 35 weeks of pregnancy that they will not allow me to leave the hospital with contractions unless I take this drug( terbutaline). I was never been examined by a doctor that day. Only a nurse. She told me that I should not resist taking the drug since it is “100%safe”. The second time I was administered this drug was at 38 weeks for the External Cephalic Version ( rotating a fetus that is in the breach position). Again, I was not informed about the side effects and off label use of this drug. Now, my daughter is 20 months old and she has been already diagnosed with significant motor and cognitive delays. She has a tic disorder, motor stereotypies, and possible autism ( we are still under observation of Nevada early intervention program specialists for the final diagnosis). I was very careful during my pregnancy and did not take any drugs/ medication except terbutaline drug that was forced on me by the medical professionals! I lost the trust to the medical community!

My heart is heavy tonight as I can’t sleep cause I’m worried about my daughters health… As you all know about a year ago she was diagnosed with Wolf Parkinson White Syndrome a congenital birth defect caused by the medication Brethine during my pregnancy… WPW syndrome is a basically a misfire in the heart u know the pause your heart takes in between every beat…..? I have so many similarities with every person in this blog it’s so overwhelming that it finally hit me that I needed to look up this class-action I to in 1995 was on this medication and my son has had colic night terrors difficulty learning social anxiety all of it and more and he cannot function well socially. He is now 20 and it’s very difficult this realization has me in tears, how could they still be administering this drug?!

I was given an IV with Brethine 2 or 3 times beginning at 35 weeks back in 2004 to stop contractions. When my son was in third grade, he was diagnosed with a non verbal learning disorder, dysgraphia and a central auditory processing delay. He has always struggled with school. Since I was at 35 weeks, I really could have delivered and I may not have a son with a learning disability that will affect the rest of his life and ours. No amount of money can take away my son’s learning disability, but if this drug caused this, someone needs to take responsibility.

It breaks my heart to read all these comments. I too was given brethine to stop pre-term labor with my first son. His infancy and early years were a nightmare: constant screaming, violent behavior, inability to sleep, social issues. He was diagnosed with autism. We have come a long way, God, I think of all the nights I wished I wouldn’t wake up in be morning to start the nightmare all over again. It’s criminal that we were given this drug.
One of the lifesavers for my son was giving him blue-green algae. It supposedly helps “protein-starved” brains, which is frequently seen in these types of kids. I encourage you all to look into it. And I hope that one day we all receive justice.

1989 I was admitted for preterm labor and held for bed rest, given Terbutaline injections and pills, Betamethasone injections, and Mag sufate from January through March. My hands became trembling during that time and now, still, almost 28 years later I have fine motor issues and neurological issues. My daughter had speech delays, learning disabilities, and now is dealing with neurological health issues as well. All signs and symptoms are like MS or Lupus, however test results rule those out. The Dr’s have not been able to tell us what is wrong with us, but I have always felt it was linked to the drugs forced on me during the last trimester of my pregnancy. My other children do not have any of the health issues as my daughter.
Is there a way to test to prove all these years later that these drugs may be responsible for neurological issues? Is this case still ongoing?

This is so heartbreaking to read … and it has been heartbreaking to live … My first pregnancy I went into labor at 28 weeks and I was hospitalized and given IV of terbutaline .. my son was born two days later and is a healthy 31 year old. We are so lucky .. My second pregnancy, two years later, I was showing signs of premature labor at 19 weeks. I was hospitalized and given shots/IV of terbuatline. Labor did not progress so I was put on oral terbutaline every three hours. Also, a cerclage of two stitches were put in my cervix. I stayed hospitalized on strict bed rest for two weeks and then sent home on strict bed rest and terbutaline every three hours, day and night. I faithfully stayed laying on my side and setting my alarm clock for every three hours, while my mother came over each day to take care of my son and I. Once a week I would go into the high risk clinic at the hospital to be physically checked. I continued to have contractions, usually three or four in an hour and would go into the ER to be checked as instructed, because of the risk of hemorrhaging due to the two stitches in my uterus. Finally we stopped rushing to the ER since the contractions continued on .. and did for the entire pregnancy. Unless something new presented itself. I had to stop the terbutaline at about 32 .. 33 weeks because it was to hard to take. I had been on it every three hours for something like 13 weeks .. and couldn’t tolerate the anxiousness and lack of sleep. I had the stitches taken out I believe about 36 weeks and my daughter was born about a week before my due date .. I was given pain medication for the labor and my daughter was found to be lethargic in the nursery and a nurse saw he struggling .. she was brought to the neonatal unit and had tests which all were negative. She was fine withing 24 hours and I was told it was the pain medication. I was given the customary EKG while getting the initial shot of terbutaline for both pregnancies to make sure MY heart could handle the drug. I felt crazy .. The nurse described the feelings perfectly .. Like a cat being electrocuted .. if you can picture a cat clinging onto a barbwire fence that is exactly the feeling.
My daughter is now 29 years old … it has been heartbreaking what she has gone through and I have as a family. She was diagnosed with a learning disability after I signed to have her repeat kindergarten .. After first grade I was told she had accommodated and was fine. After many years of private tutoring I had an independent evaluation done at a RI hospital in fifth grade. She has five learning disabilities and I was told she has a very very high intelligence level and that she will be much more intelligent than the majority of the teachers she will have in her life, BUT .. will never reach her full potential because of the all the learning disabilities and because of the age of when she was finally being diagnosed. She was working so hard to accommodate for deficits that she kept slipping thru the cracks even with my constant questioning and tutors .. Emotional. psychological, behavioral issues I don’t even know where to begin … She has been in therapy since young age … She has tried to kill her self several times .. the worst being when she was 17 .. and recently found out that when she was quite young she would take over the counter pills hoping to die .. heartbreaking beyond what a parent can bear .. ADHD .. bipolar diagnosis and drugs that almost killed her with side effects like seizures, bruising, abnormal white blood counts, mood swings .. Antidepressants will horrible mood swings and other side effects … She has has GI problems since young.. Car sickness at a young age and constant stomach aches, etc. that couldn’t be diagnosed. At 16 she had a very serious, and almost fatal, bout of pancreatitis. She spent a week in the hospital with no food or drink because of the severity of inflammation in her pancreas and liver ducts (gallstones blocking everything) and then had five hours of surgery to remove her gallbladder which was filled with stones, and more removed from the ducts. Close to 50 removed during the endoscope before the surgery. Social problems that were over the top since she has been about 13 … heartbreaking emotional/psychological issues … and she began to cut herself around 17 years old. I was told the terbutaline was so common in the city I was hospitalized in that they should put it in the water. When I stopped the drug, against the dr. recommendation, I was told in the ER that they had never had a patient that took so much of it for so long a period of time. It was never mentioned about possibilities that the drug could harm by baby. Or me .. It made my heart race and made me anxious. No one in my family has the problems my daughter has … I was given it in an IV for two days in 1985, and the long term for my pregnancy with my daughter in 1987. My Love and prayers go out to all the children and families that are dealing/living with the effects of this drug on their children and/or themselves.

I’m at a cross roads of what to think. I was given Brethine from the 4th month of pregnancy until 35th week to keep from going into early labor. Never told of danger to me or my baby. My son is 25 born in 1991 and he’s getting worse on anxiety and mood disorders. Always had difficulties with handling stress or anything that put pressure on him. I know he needs help. I know he feels different. Seems to always be struggling with something mentally. Difficulty expressing his feelings and thoughts. Had trouble at school. Always thought it was him or something I did. He’s quiet, withdrawn, socially anxious, trouble sleeping, trouble focusing, cannot think farther than a day or so, used to talk of suicide, easily enraged, compulsive, cannot function on his own without help, just seems to be getting worse. Has turned to pot to help him with anxiety and sleeping. Im going to tell him about this and hope he understands and goes to get help. I pray that he finds the help he needs. Please keep me informed.

I was terbutaline for pre term labor at 26 weeks and on it subcutaneously for 10 weeks.
My son was born at 37 weeks and he had cerebral vascular accident at birth. I asked the hospital if my son had a stroke the first hour of his birth because my husband witnessed the stroke. They said no. He was finally diagnosed with Cerebral palsy at age 5 when his doctor recommended he see the doctors who come up to Alaska by the Shriners. They said he had Left side hemiperesis. He was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was 19 and he continued to decline from stress and the regular life of a college student.
I was not told that this was an off label use. I was in the hospital on mag and could have stayed there. I was sent home on the terbutaline pump for 10 weeks and started having heart issues right after his birth. I am now in heart failure and am Progressively declining and will need a transplant. My son struggles with seizures and his issues with spastic muscles from Cerebral Palsy and had depression and anxiety in general due to Epilepsy. This effects all aspects of his life regularly to include severe limitations to enter the work world.
I don’t understand why there is not a class action lawsuit for babies and mothers who were given off label drugs and their babies had strokes like mine or brain bleeds that led to a diagnosis of hemaparisis or Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy.

My son is now homeless. His mental condition I am sure is due to my being administered subcutaneously for 4 months during my pregnancy in 1992! I was unaware that a lawsuit was filed in 2013! Please help!

I had no idea a class action lawsuit had been filed. Unfortunately, we are just now finding answers to our 12 year old dgt. I was started on Terbutaline injections and pills at 26 weeks of pregnancy. Our dgt was late to crawl, talk and walk. She has been in speech since she was 3 y/o. She requires one on one assistance with assignments, has great difficulty with memory recall, comprehension, both expressive and receptive language, processing and sequencing. The neuro psych testing has not been covered by our insurance and we are now in the thousands of dollars range. She was finally able to get into special education in the 3rd grade, but had a horrible experience. We placed her in a cottage school atmosphere for the past 2 years due to the small class size, but she still cannot master any of the material. I am research multi sensory computer programs to do next year at home.

It was not until I was pregnant with our son when a nurse asked me about my previous pregnancy. When I mentioned Terbutaline, she said, “Oh no, we can’t use that anymore.” This, of course, peeked my interest. Our son in now 7 and is a straight A student in school.

This has been a very long journey and I feel like we are alone in trying to figure all of this out. We had no idea there was a class action suit. Please have another one and be sure to include us, as well as all of the other parents/victims listed here.

Please contact me if any other information is needed. Thanks so much!!

I wish I had known about this years ago. Our 25 year old son has practically everything wrong with his brain, and is a complete mess, and our life is a living hell. It is too late to file a lawsuit?

In 2002, our son was born at 36 weeks while taking Terbutaline in pill form every 4 hours for a month. At 32 weeks, I was hospitalized for 8 days and was given Magnesium Sulfate causing a migraine, so it was stopped. Three shots of steroids were given for the lungs. He was a very colicky newborn, walked at 17 months, and required speech intervention as a toddler.
At 4, his preschool teacher suggested ADHD and social skills classes were recommended in kindergarten. Except for middle school, our son has been in private school for the benefit of a reduced class size. He has difficulty remembering basic tasks, names, and becomes easily frustrated. He is a kind and friendly teen, but I truly believe the Terbutaline ruined the potential of what he could have been. His sister was born 17 months after him (no Terbutaline) and has not encountered the learning/attention issues, but rather the emotional/financial toll over the years. We inquired about a class action suit with a law firm while he was in the primary grades to help defray the costs of our interventions, but were told he wouldn’t qualify since he was not a twin and it would be hard to prove that the cognitive issues and ADHD were in fact inherited. My husband is college educated and I hold a masters from Johns Hopkins. It is our belief that our son should not have to struggle so hard to recall basic ideas and we truly believe Terbutaline is to blame. Had I known what I know today, I would have remained amply hydrated and allow bedrest to do the rest.

I took brethine for 2 months and my daughter has had multiple psychosocial issues and a seizure disorder.

These stories are heartbreaking. I can relate to many so close closely, as they mirror my own experience. Our daughter suffers academically and well as psychologically. We have two other children with nothing similar to these issues. It is not something that runs in our family. Dealing with these issues was so foreign to my husband and I. We have all had to see a therapist and try to learn one step at a time. I hope is there is ever a lawsuit we will have a chance for our story, and so many others, to be heard.

I was prescribed Terbutaline for all of my pregnancies from June 1987-April 1994 and all six of my children and myself have experienced multiple health and dental problems because of this bad drug.

I took this drug for two pregnancies, one time for 3 months and the other for 4. I have one child both of my children has disabilities. I had to have heart surgery in 2007. I was on the medicine from a time period from 1991 and then in 1993

I was given Brethine, in tablet form, in 1990, for preterm labor at 28 weeks. I remained on Brethine until my so was born at 36 weeks. When Tyler was around 2 I felt that something wasn’t quite right. At 4 he was diagnosed with ADHD and until 16 was also diagnosed with PDD-NOS, Autism Spectrum disorder, ODD, ADHD, OCD, Depression and Anxiety. He endured multiple hospitalizations for explosive behavior, many doctors, tests, hospitalizations, schools, therapies and therapists. The one thing all professionals said was that he was very complicated! Tyler never was able to finish high school, has been on full disability since he was 18. Now at 27, he’s pretty much a recluse.
AFTER READING ABOUT BRETHINE BEING A POSSIBLE CAUSE OF ALL OF HIS DISIBILITIES, I FEES SICK TO MY STOMACH! I WOULD NEVER HAVEN TAKEN BRETHINE. IT BREAKS MY HEART!

I want to be added to a class action suit. I just found out about a law suit is possible. My baby boy has suffered enough and I know his issues are due to the brethine that was given to me in 1999 through an iv and orally. It did not do a good job stopping the contractions because my son was still born six weeks premature and he had a slow growth rate and at seven he was diagnosed ADHD and now that he is older he is looking like he has traits of Asperger Syndrome. I developed toxemia and was induced and that is why my baby was born 6 weeks early. Six years later I was hospitalized for High blood pressure never had issues with my blood pressure didnt have issues of any sort until after I was administered the Brethine meds. The blood pressure has caused me to have kidney disease and I know its all related. I want that pharmaceutucal company sued. I am tired of humans being used as guinea pigs and these pharmaceutucal companies profiting off our lives and our children lives. My child has suffered enough and a mother knows when something is not right. I hated to put my sons on meds he struggled severely in school. I can truly use your help for the sake of my child and other children whio have been affected by those terrible drugs. Thank you!!

i began the tributaline pump at 21 wks and stayed on it for 15 weeks. My son has not had one happy day. as a baby, he cried non stop and could not self soothe. He had trouble attaching to everyone, even to me. I couldn’t hug him, read to him, etc…He is now 20 yrs old. he can not sit still or focus. he has been diagnosed w ADHD, executive functioning problems and anxiety. He suffers from a pain disorder too. He can not get good grades. Socially, “he just doesn’t get it”. He has difficulty relating to others. He states that he wakes up every day shaking; that his body is constantly in “flight mode”. Everything he sees around him, and even the air that he breathes makes him anxious. I too live with terrible guile bc i poisoned my baby with IV tributaline. I have heard that it is “Nuerotixic”; that it crosses the brain barrier of the developing fetus. It seems that we are all experiencing the same results. What can we do about this???

This is heart breaking and yet so similar to my son. I took for premature labor and then for 5-6 weeks. My son was then delivered full term.
My son has never seemed to be able to communicate normally and has severe anxiety. At age 5 my son had over 12 speech articulation problems and never wanted to go to school to the point the school would have principle waiting outside to coax him out of the car everyday. At age thirteen he started self medicating and as of now he is almost 26. He hates his life and is very depressed..he can not understand why he has issues…but it all seems to make sense now. I just remember how I felt when I was taking the pills…for those weeks like I wanted to jump out of my skin…I imagine that is how my son has felt for his whole life. My heart aches for all of our children that are suffering.

Is it to late to be a part of this lawsuit?

I have been a patient who was administered the terbutiline for pre-term labor as well. My son was born in 1996. He is now 21 years old. I have noticed that while he never had learning disabilities other than still writing like a kindergartner, he definitely has problems with social skills, breathing problems and oddly enough he is developing very bad skin problems. I cant link the social skills or the skin problems to heredity. I do also have breathing problems that no one else in our family has had. Could the’yre be a connection here. Has anyone else had these issues.

We are currently in Atlanta but she was born in MInneapolis, MN. I have long held that my daughter (now 23) was affected adversely by the brethine. In 1995, I went into pre-term labor I had to take it every 4 hours for 10 weeks. They promised me it didn’t cross the placental barrier, yet the effects on me were hideous. I would shake so badly that my eyes would literally shake and I’d have to just close them. I believe my adrenal and anxiety issues (heart palpitations) that I’ve had since are related to the jolts of adrenaline. Three days after she was born, she started screaming and she didn’t stop for a year. It wasn’t just colic. She was hypersensitive to being bundled too tightly, sound and light. My friend suggested that she had sensory issues. Cold didn’t bother her, but a tag in her clothes would make her insane. Later we dealt with inability to concentrate which resulted in a dx of visual tracking disorder – honest to god, I have no idea how she got out of school. She struggled. She cannot retain information and gets really easily overwhelmed The emotional issues started up by five and by 13 she was a full blown drug and alcohol user. Since then we’ve dealt with a myriad of issues and have never been able to resolve them. The most recent is a potential borderline personality dx. She exhibits signs of auspergers, bi-polar 1, sensory integration disorder and borderline personality disorder She has been to counselors and psychologists her entire life and not a one helped her. Medicine makes everything worse. She has suffered so much and it has been truly hellish for us both.

I too went into preterm labor 7.5 months into my pregnancy. This was at the end of 2011 December – my daughter was born full term. But she’s had emotional problems since she was in about the second grade. She’s now a JR In high school. Every year in December is when she lapses in a downward spiral. I went into pre term labor with my son in 2007 but was not given the same med. my son has no problem with mirtivation or depression. The medicine is terrible. Had I known the effects I would have said no.

I took brethine in my 3rd trimester in 1990-my son has so many mental problems and has had his entire life…his schizophrenia has turned into schizoaffective disorder and he is in and out of mental hospitals continually-he’s now 28 and life is terrible for both him and those who love him due to his mental condition…

I am 26 years old. My mom was on a terbutaline pump for more than 3 months in 1992. I have severe ADHD, severe anxiety disorder, OCD, insomnia, sleep state misperception, a learning disability that has to do with perceiving information, depression, tachycardia, irritable bowel syndrome, chest pain, migraines, school was terrible for me. I was behind in school at first. I have vocal impulse problems and can be very argumentative, social interactions are difficult for me although I love being social. I have made it through college but it was difficult and took everything I had. My ADHD medication costs me over $100 a month.

I will given the terbutaline pump at 20 weeks with my daughter. She was delivered at 35 weeks. She was delayed from the beginning. She has been diagnosed as mildly mentally retarded. She also began having seizures at 5. Two years ago she began passing out from her blood pressure bottoming out. She was born in 1991.
