Mother and Daughter Injured in Crash Involving LAPD – Police Crash Injury Lawyers
An Encino crash involving LAPD officers sent a mother and her six-year-old daughter to the hospital. The crash occurred on Monday, March 17, 2025 just before 9pm on the 5600 block of Lindley Avenue in Encino.
Details surrounding the cause of the incident are unclear. It is also unclear whether the LAPD patrol car had their lights/sirens activated at the time of the crash.
Footage from the site of the crash showed the mother and daughter in a wheelchair as medical personnel with the fire department took them to a nearby ambulance. They were transported to a local hospital and treated for injuries, although the type of injuries they sustained are unknown.
Footage of the aftermath shows the woman’s vehicle, a dark-colored station wagon, with the front of the vehicle on the sidewalk. The police cruiser was on the street, in contact with the station wagon’s passenger side. Both vehicles sustained only minor damage.
One of the officers was seen having his left hand examined by a paramedic at the scene, although no further information was available.
Unfortunately, crashes involving LAPD patrol vehicles and civilian vehicles occur quite frequently. These crashes can leave those involved suffering from significant injuries and could cause extensive property damage. If you or a member of your family suffered harm, you might have many questions. These questions may include the following:
- Can I file a lawsuit if I was in a crash with police?
- Can I sue and receive compensation if I was injured in a crash with police?

Car accidents can result in many injuries, which can include the following:
- Head injuries (concussions)
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Neck injuries (including whiplash)
- Back injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Hip injuries
- Knee injuries
- Fractures and dislocations
- Sprains and strains
- Scrapes and bruises
- And more
Although these injuries might appear to be only minor, the truth is that these injuries can cause extensive harm and could require surgeries to treat as well as physical therapy, for instance. Car accident injuries can also potentially be fatal.
Can I Sue for Injuries caused by a Crash with Police? This is a very important question. Although it is true that police departments and their officers are often protected by governmental immunity (or sovereign immunity), police departments and police officers can still be held liable in certain situations. More specifically, police immunity does not generally apply in cases of gross negligence, recklessness, or traffic violations. In other words, if the incident discussed above occurred because the officer was speeding, ran a red light, or was reckless in any way on the road, then they could be held liable; they could also be held liable if they failed to follow police policy on pursuits or emergency driving, for example. Although police have protection while they are responding to emergency situations and have their lights/sirens on, they must still exercise due care.
It is also important to note that civilian drivers could also be found at-fault for these incidents. In some cases, comparative negligence may apply, meaning that liability is shared.

Can I Recover Any Compensation after a Crash with LAPD?If the police department is found liable, you could be entitled to receive compensation. Some of the different categories of compensation that you could be entitled to receive could include the following:
- Medical costs
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
- Property damage
- Punitive damages
- Wrongful death benefits
- Legal expenses

What Should I Do?After any car crash, you should consider some of the following suggestions:
- Take photos of any visible physical injuries
- Take photos of the scene of the accident
- Contact the emergency department
- Seek medical attention as soon as possible
- File an accident report with the local authorities
- Gather the information of the other drivers involved in the incident (including insurance information)
- Speak to witnesses and collect their contact information
- Gather any surveillance video that captured the incident
- Gather all relevant medical records
- Seek legal help as soon as possible
What if there were cops involved in the incident? In situations involving police, you should do the following:
- Take note of the exact date and time of the crash
- Take note of the names of the police officers involved in the crash (including badge numbers)
- File a report with the appropriate agency
- Seek the expertise of a lawyer experienced in government claims
Incidents involving police are considered government claims; therefore, they are subject to much shorter deadlines than other types of claims. In California, government claims must be filed within 6 months. If the government agency responds to the claim with rejection, the claimant will have another 6 months to file a civil lawsuit. If the government agency fails to respond within the time allowed, then the claimant will have up to two years to file a lawsuit.
