One Neighborhood is Home to Multiple of Los Angeles’ Most Dangerous Intersections – Car Accident Lawyers

A recent study revealed that the most dangerous intersections in Los Angeles are concentrated in just one neighborhood. The study reviewed over 13,800 police reports of collisions resulting in injury or death between 2020 and 2022. The study found that 86 intersections saw at least 10 collisions with injury or death during this time. Ultimately, the study determined that the most dangerous intersections are concentrated in South Central Los Angeles, with four out of the five most dangerous intersections.

The five most dangerous intersections in Los Angeles are listed below:

  • South Vermont Avenue and West Florence Avenue (with 19 injury/death crashes)
  • West Manchester Avenue and South Normandie Avenue (with 18 injury/death crashes)
  • Victory Boulevard and Lindley Avenue (with 18 injury/death crashes)
  • West Manchester Avenue and South Vermont Avenue (with 18 injury/death crashes)
  • East Manchester Avenue and Avalon Boulevard (with 18 injury crashes)

According to the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), more than 200 people die due to traffic collisions on city streets every year. In addition, the agency stated that “residents of underserved communities are disproportionately killed in traffic crashes.” Residents are well aware that their complaints often go ignored and that issues are not addressed promptly.

Reportedly, under the Vision Zero commitment, the city aimed to eliminate traffic deaths entirely by the year 2025. However, in the last year, deaths actually increased to 300. This leaves the city only two years to reverse the trends and eliminate deaths. The city has three guiding principles, one of which is that reducing speed limits would result in safer streets.

If this highlights anything, it is that the city has failed to keep roads safe for all road users, including drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Unfortunately, unsafe road conditions often lead to incidents, which can lead to injuries and even death. When incidents occur due to unsafe road conditions, then the city could be liable for all resulting harm – in other words, the city could be sued.

If you or a loved one suffered harm in a car accident or other type of collision at a Los Angeles intersection, you could have grounds to file a lawsuit against the city; more specifically, you could have the right to sue the city for their negligence. For more information about your right to file a claim, it is important that you seek legal assistance as soon as possible.

Common Road Defects that Can Lead to Incidents

Some of the dangerous conditions that could ultimately lead to road incidents include the following:

  • Blind intersections or blind curves
  • Poorly lit intersections or roads
  • Poorly lit pedestrian crossings
  • No bike lanes or no barriers between bike lanes and traffic lanes
  • No speed bumps, speed humps, speed cushions, etc.
  • No posted speed limit signs
  • No speed limit enforcement
  • High speed limits
  • Defective traffic lights and signals

As mentioned above, many underserved neighborhoods and communities often go ignored when it comes to road safety. Even though the city is well aware of the issues present, they do not take immediate action – as they often prioritize more affluential areas.

Injuries Resulting from Traffic Collisions due to Unsafe Road Conditions

Unsafe road conditions can result in car accidents, motorcycle accidents, bicycle accidents, and pedestrian accidents, for example. All of these incidents could result in devastating injuries, like the following:

  • Head injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Neck injuries
  • Back injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Hip injuries
  • Pelvic injuries
  • Knee injuries
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations
  • Sprains and strains
  • Nerve injuries
  • Muscle injuries
  • Ligament injuries
  • Crushing injuries
  • Severed limbs
  • Lacerations
  • Scrapes and bruises

Although these injuries might not seem severe listed above, it is important to note that these injuries could result in significant injuries, some of which could lead to permanent harm. These injuries could also be potentially fatal.

Can I Sue the City for an Accident Caused by Unsafe Roads?

Can I Recover Compensation?

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost earnings
  • Pain and suffering
  • Property damage

  • Punitive damages
  • Legal fees

You might have questions about the average case value of car accident cases against the city. How much is my car accident case against Los Angeles worth? How much can I get if I was injured in a pedestrian accident due to defective roads? How much can I get from the city if my traffic collision case is successful? These are all very common questions. Unfortunately, these questions are not easy to answer. Ultimately, the value of your case will be based on a number of factors, including the type of injuries sustained, the severity of said injuries, the total medical costs incurred, the total amount of wages that were lost, etc. In general, these cases can have values ranging from $50,000 to $750,000 – and sometimes even more. For an in-depth evaluation of the possible value of your claim, we recommend that you seek legal assistance immediately.

How Long Do I Have to Sue?

If you are filing a claim against any city agency, like LADOT, for an injury or a wrongful death, it is important that you act fast. These claims are government claims that are ultimately subject to a much shorter statute of limitations than normal claims. Government claims are typically subject to a six-month statute of limitations, meaning that claimants only have six months to pursue their claims. If your claim is rejected (that is, you receive a rejection letter), then you will have an additional six months from the date of the rejection to file your claim in court. If you do not receive a rejection letter within 45 days, your claim is considered rejected, and you will have two years to file your claim in court.

If you are unsure of the total length of time that you have to file your claim, it is important that you seek legal assistance immediately. Filing a claim is time sensitive. Waiting too long to take any action could result in losing the right to sue entirely.
