On September 5, 2024, Delta Cycle issued a recall for their Ceiling Hoists with Straps. According to the recall (number 24-354), the plastic buckles on the straps being used to hold a canoe, a kayak, or other large objects can suddenly break, posing an injury risk to consumers. The recall includes over 25,000 units of the product in the U.S.

The affected Ceiling Hoists with Straps have model number RS2300. The model number can be found only on the product packaging. The product is supposed to be used to lift ladders, bicycles, kayaks, boxes, and other large objects off the floor with the use of a pulley system, allowing for elevated storage of bulky items.

The following serial number ranges are included in the recall:

  • 65629 – 66828
  • 112494 – 114493
  • 115494 – 116502
  • 131332 – 132819
  • 165193 – 167192
  • 187360 – 188895
  • 220801 – 222800
  • 264059 – 266058
  • 396421 – 397428
  • 428259 – 430258
  • 464905 – 466408
  • 1650319 – 1651326
  • 1667038 – 1669037
  • 1717501 – 1718044
  • 1750965 – 1751972
  • 1776082 – 1777089

The serial numbers can be found on the underside of the flat plate that attaches the pulleys to the ceiling (although some will not have a serial number at all).

The defective products were sold at REI and at other independent stores, as well as online at Amazon.com and designbydelta.com from February 2017 to July 2024 for about $40.

The company has received four reports of incidents, one of which included a minor injury.

The company is urging affected consumers to immediately stop using the product and contact them to receive free replacement straps. They are urging consumers to cut the old straps with buckles in half and discard them; if consumers are not using the included straps, no action is needed.
