Excelsior Charter School Teacher in Victorville Arrested for Committing Lewd Acts
Brett David Dahl, a 43-year-old teacher in San Bernardino County, has been arrested after allegations of inappropriate conduct with a 16-year-old girl. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Specialized Investigation Division – Crimes Against Children Detail confirmed the investigation and arrested the suspect in April 24, 2024.
Brett David Dahl, a Victorville resident, was a teacher with Excelsior Charter Schools. Excelsior Charter Schools have multiple campuses in the area.
Dahl was booked into the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto. He is facing multiple charges, including contacting a minor to commit a felony, meeting with a minor for lewd purposes, child endangerment, and child abduction.
The authorities believe that there may be additional victims. They have released his image and are urging any other victims or anyone with additional information to come forward.
Unfortunately, it is very common for teachers to take advantage of their position as trusted adults around minors and abuse them. Yes – parents of children who were victimized by their teachers (and victims, themselves, once they are adults) can file lawsuits for abuse at schools. Whether the abuse is rape, attempted rape, sodomy, fondling, groping, kissing, forcing the victim to touch the attacker or perform any sexual acts with the attacker, making sexually explicit comments or jokes, sending inappropriate text messages or emails, sending or showing the minor sexually explicit images, etc., you could sue.
This is based on the duty of care owed. Excelsior Charter Schools has a duty to keep students safe. A major part of ensuring the safety of students is doing everything to ensure that teachers and other staff do not pose a threat to students. This means that teachers should be subjected to thorough background checks (both before employment and during employment), thorough training, and appropriate supervision. It is also important for these schools to have the policies and procedures for reporting abuse and investigating abuse. When schools fail to identify abuse or fail to address abuse that has been reported by a student, a parent, or staff, then the school could be liable for the harm suffered. Of course, schools could also be liable for abuse when there was a cover-up.

Examples of the Harm Victims Could SufferWhen a trusted adult acts inappropriately towards a minor and engages or tries to engage in sexual contact, the minor can suffer significant harm – even if nothing physical happened. Victims can potentially suffer some of the following:
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Pregnancy and related complications
- Injuries to genitals
- Injuries to reproductive organs
- Post-traumatic stress
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Panic
- Fear
All claims are subject to a statute of limitations or a deadline to sue. In California, victims of child sex abuse have until the age of forty to file lawsuits. This is twenty-two years from their eighteenth birthday. There is also a five-year discovery rule that applies, which means that victims can file their claims within five years of discovering the harm caused by the abuse. This discovery rule is very important considering that many victims may suffer from suppressed memories.
If you are a parent that chooses to pursue a claim on your child’s behalf, it is important that you understand that your child will not be able to bring forth a claim once he or she is an adult.
For more information about the time that you have to file your claim, contact the experts here at our law firm as soon as possible. Our team is ready to help you file your lawsuit on time.
Based on the details surrounding your claim, you could be entitled to receive compensation for some of the following:
- Medical costs
- Lost pay
- Pain and suffering
- Punitive damage
- Treble damage
- Legal fees
What are treble damages? Treble damages are awarded only in cases where the sexual abuse was covered up by the establishment. So, if the school was aware of the abuse but failed to do anything about it and actually covered it up, you could be entitled to treble damages. Treble damages essentially triple the amount of damages awarded.
How much compensation can I receive? The specific value of this claims is based on very specific details, such as the type of abuse suffered, the type of injuries suffered, etc. In general, child sex abuse cases are high value cases. Possible case values can range from $500,000 to $5 million, for example.
