Hollywood 7 Eleven Worker Clinically Dead after being Attacked by Store Manager – 7-Eleven Lawsuit

A 7-Eleven employee has died after she was allegedly attacked by her store manager during a shift at a Hollywood 7-Eleven location. On June 24, 2025, at around 2:15pm, officers with the Wilshire Division responded to a call about a felony battery at the 7-Eleven located on the 5700 block of Melrose Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Reportedly, there was an altercation between a female victim and a female suspect; the altercation began as a verbal argument that turned physical. When officers arrived, they found a woman in her 20s unconscious on the floor, suffering critical injuries. She was rushed to a hospital. According to police, the suspect fled the scene before authorities arrived. As of June 30, no arrests had been made yet.

The victim has been identified as Jessica McLaughlin. Her brother, Sean McLaughlin, stated that Jessica was nearing the end of her work shift when the assistant manager started antagonizing her and threw a bottle at her, resulting in an escalation. Other employees told the victim’s family that the manager pinned Jessica to the ground and straddled her, which caused her to lose oxygen and lose consciousness. According to Sean McLaughlin, the suspect attempted to delete surveillance footage before fleeing on a bicycle.

Reportedly, coworkers attempted to perform CPR, but the damage was too severe.

According to doctors, the lack of oxygen caused irreversible brain damage which resulted in Jessica being declared “clinically dead.” Her family planned to take her off life support either on Tuesday or Wednesday (July 1 or July 2) pending funeral arrangements. According to her loved ones, she had been experiencing bullying in the workplace.

A 7-Eleven spokesperson confirmed that the company is cooperating with law enforcement and that the suspect has been terminated. The investigation is ongoing and the search for the suspect continues.

The family of the victim may have grounds to file a lawsuit for the death of the victim. The Severity of Oxygen Deprivation in Assault Incidents

In the incident described above, the suspect reportedly pinned the victim to the ground and straddled her, restricting oxygen. During an assault incident, strangling or, in this case, straddling, can quickly cause devastating harm. Consider the following information on the timeline of brain damage from oxygen deprivation:

  • 0 to 1 minute – brain activity begins to slow, although no damage occurs yet. The risk of damage quickly increases.
  • 1 to 3 minutes – some brain cells start dying and neurons begin to malfunction.
  • 3 to 5 minutes – loss of consciousness often occurs, brain damage becomes likely.
  • 5 to 10 minutes – severe and irreversible damage is likely to occur.
  • 10+ minutes – most brain cells have died, and survival is unlikely without severe neurological impairment.

Brain cells are extremely sensitive to oxygen loss because they require a constant supply of oxygen to be able to function. Once oxygen deprivation begins, neurons start to die quickly. Even brief oxygen deprivation can cause cognitive, emotional, or physical impairment. Of course, these incidents could be fatal.

Can I File a Wrongful Death Claim?

Yes, you could have the right to file a wrongful death claim. Of course, the victim’s family could file charges against the assistant manager that killed Jessica. However, her family could also pursue civil action. It is important to note that although the victim’s family could file a civil claim against the attacker, they could also have grounds to file a claim against the business.

Since the incident happened in the workplace, the employer could actually be liable especially if the victim had previously reported the bullying or any other incidents that had occurred. The business could also be liable for negligent hiring (failing to subject the employee to background checks), negligent training, and negligent supervision, for example. If the business ignored past incidents, then they could also be liable. In addition, under premise liability, the property owner could actually be liable for failing to keep the convenience store safe and free of dangers – including dangers presented by other employees.

Without a doubt, there are many different options available for victims and their families. If you are ready to explore the legal options available to you after the wrongful death of a member of your family, please do not hesitate to reach out to our legal team as soon as possible.

How Long Do I Have to Sue?

All claims are subject to a deadline or a statute of limitations. If claimants do not file their claims on time, then they can risk losing their right to sue entirely. In California, wrongful death claims, along with most personal injury claims, are generally subject to a two-year deadline. This means that claimants will only have two years to file their claims. The two-year timeframe starts from the date of the victim’s death.
