Hospital Nurse Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault of Unconscious Patient

A Lake Elsinore man employed as a nurse at multiple hospitals throughout Riverside County was arrested on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. The man was arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault of an unconscious patient, according to authorities. According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, their Special Victims Unit started the investigation in June 2025 after they received information about inappropriate contact between a hospital employee and an unconscious patient.

The nurse was identified as Lauro Gonzales Jr. (40 years old). On July 15, investigators conducted a vehicle stop near Interstate 15 and Temescal Canyon Road, where the suspect was taken into custody. Investigators executed a search warranty at the suspect’s residence, where they found additional evidence.

The suspect was booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center and faces a charge of sexual penetration of an unconscious person.

Investigators believe that there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.

Unfortunately, incidents like the one described above occur often. Nurses take advantage of their proximity to vulnerable patients and abuse them. If you or a member of your family were sexually abused by a nurse, it is important that you seek legal assistance as soon as possible. You could have the right to file a lawsuit and even recover compensation.

Liability for Nurse Sexual Assault of Unconscious Patients

Can I file a lawsuit if a member of my family was sexually abused by a nurse? Yes, you could have the right to file a lawsuit. What can I do if my unconscious family member was abused by their nurse? If a member of your family was sexually assaulted by a nurse, you may have the right to sue.

Unfortunately, many nurses take advantage of their positions and their proximity to the most vulnerable patients. When a nurse abuses as unconscious patient, their employer could be liable. More specifically, the employer could be liable based on negligent hiring, training, and supervision. Some employers may argue that they cannot be held responsible for the malicious and intentional actions of their employers, but that is far from true.

Employers have the duty to do the following:

  • Subject all prospective employees to background checks
  • Subject existing employees to random background checks
  • Train and supervise all employees
  • Ensure that there are appropriate policies and procedures in place
  • Properly investigate any reports that come in
  • And more

When an employer fails to identify red flags on background checks, fails to subject workers to background checks, ignores reports of sexual misconduct, or knowingly covers up sexual misconduct, then they can be held responsible for any harm that occurs.
