Wheel Flies Off United Airlines Plane during Takeoff in LAX – Plane Injury Attorneys
A Boeing 757-200 lost a wheel during takeoff at the Los Angeles International Airport on Monday, July 8, 2024. United Airlines is currently investigating the situation.
The incident involves United Flight 1001 traveling from Los Angeles to Denver with a departure time of shortly after 7am. The flight was carrying 174 passengers and seven crew members. Reportedly, the pilot was unaware that the plane had lost the tire.
The pilot of an Allegiant Airlines flight saw the tire coming off the plane and reported it to air traffic control. This pilot said that they saw the tire “rolling down past bravo-seven, bravo-eight.” Another pilot said he saw the wheel rolling across two runways into a cargo area.
The incident resulted in air traffic control diverting a flight so that crews could inspect the runway. A short while later, a spokesperson with United said that the “wheel [had] been recovered…[and that] no injuries were reported on the aircraft or on the ground.”
Reportedly, in March of this year, another United Airlines Boeing plane (specifically a B777-200) had to make an emergency landing in Los Angeles after also losing a tire during takeoff from San Francisco to Osaka, Japan. In this incident, the tire slammed into cars at an employee parking lot at the airport.
Unfortunately, incidents like these are becoming more and more common. This can be due to poor conditions of Boeing planes as well as a lack of pre-flight checks both by maintenance personnel and pilots. If you or a member of your family suffered injuries as a result of an airplane losing a wheel, it is important that you seek legal assistance as soon as possible. You could have the right to sue.

Anyone who is struck by a wheel that comes off a plane could potentially suffer devastating injuries, which could include head injuries, neck injuries, back injuries, spinal cord injuries, crushing injuries, and more; airport workers are most at risk of being struck. In addition, a falling wheel can result in significant property damage to vehicles, structures, and more.
Can Boeing be Liable for Incidents Caused by Wheels Coming Off Planes?Yes – if the wheel came off the plane because of a defect present in the airplane, then Boeing could be held responsible. Since there have been multiple incidents involving Boeing airplanes in the past, it is likely that their airplanes are poorly designed or manufacturing, resulting in incidents and damages. If this is the case, then Boeing could be sued for any resulting damages.
Can United Airlines be Liable for Incidents Caused by Wheels Coming Off Planes?Yes – airlines could be liable for incidents under some circumstances.
