Breaking News: a hotel housekeeper fell ill after exposure to an unknown chemical irritant in a guest room on Thursday morning (August 29, 2024). The housekeeper, who has only been identified as a woman, entered the guest room on the fifth floor of the hotel – the Westin Los Angeles Airport located at 5400 W. Century Blvd. in Los Angeles. She entered the guest room shortly before 9 a.m. in the unoccupied room, the housekeeper found a 16-ounce water bottle and the bathtub full of a brown liquid that has yet to be identified.
According to the Fire Department, the water bottle and bathtub contained an unidentified volume of the brown liquid, although the smell reportedly caused the housekeeper and the security guard that she called to become nauseous. Just a few hours later, officials identified the liquid as an “unspecified chemical irritant” that did not represent further hazard.
Reportedly, there were no other illnesses. Hotel staff is working with Los Angeles County Health HazMat officials to get the guest room back to a safe condition for future guests.

In addition to nausea, other examples of the harm that could occur could include vomiting, skin irritation, rash, itchy eyes, watery eyes, burns, respiratory distress, and more. Although it is possible for these symptoms to go away as soon as affected parties are away from the irritant, prolonged exposure – or exposure to very dangerous chemicals – can lead to long-term health effects. In addition to physical symptoms, victims may suffer mental and emotional harm, which can include depression, fear, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, panic, and more.
Can I Sue?Yes – you could have the right to file a lawsuit if you or a loved one were harmed due to exposure to chemical irritants at a hotel. Hotel owners have a duty to ensure that their premises are safe for all guests and, of course, for their employees. They must identify and address any hazardous conditions present on the premises to prevent any incidents. Although hotel management may not be able to keep track of everything going on in guest rooms, it is essential for management to always remain vigilant to be able to identify any suspicious activity; there staff must be properly trained, there must be clear policies and procedures, and there must be appropriate surveillance/security.
Can I take action if I was injured on the job? Yes – you could have the right to take action. You could have grounds to pursue a workers compensation claim which could result in recovering compensation for medical pay, lost pay, and temporary or permanent disability, and more. However, if your harm occurred due to the gross negligence of your employer, you could actually pursue a personal injury claim. If you are unsure of how to proceed after you were injured on the job due to exposure to irritants, contact us today.
