Five Injured in Helicopter Crash at Huntington Beach

Five people, including one child, were hospitalized after a helicopter crashed into a row of palm trees at Huntington Beach on the afternoon of Saturday, October 11, 2025. According to reports, the helicopter was lowering down onto the tree line before it careened back upwards at then spun out of control. The incident occurred at approximately 2pm.

According to police, two people abord the helicopter were safely removed from the aircraft. Three people on the ground were injured. All were hospitalized, although their condition was unknown.

Reportedly, the helicopter started to spin sideways as its rear rotor stopped working. It then plummeted to the ground, although it was cushioned by the palm trees. The tail of the helicopter snapped off and the body of the aircraft ended up wedged between palm trees and a staircase.

A Huntington Beach spokesperson stated that the aircraft was “associated with the Cars and Copters event,” which, according to its website, is an automotive and helicopter event that benefits the Huntington Beach Police & Community Foundation.

The owner of the helicopter involved in the crash was identified as Eric Nixon, who is an aviation enthusiast known for risky routes and performances and posted them on social media. It was not known whether Nixon was piloting the helicopter when it crashed. The helicopter was a Bell 222SP with tail number N222E.

According to city officials, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were notified. The incident remains under investigation.

About the Aircraft

The helicopter involved in the incident above is a Bell 222SP. The Bell 222 helicopter has a history of engine failure and rotor system failures. Reported problems include defective main rotor drive link assembly causing fractures in flight.

Common Causes of Helicopter Crashes

Some of the most common causes of helicopter crashes include the following:

  • Pilot error, like failing to perform pre-flight checks, ignoring weather warnings and advisories, etc.
  • Pilot negligence, including operating the aircraft while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, knowingly performing dangerous maneuvers, flying too close to buildings, flying too close to terrain, and more
  • Helicopter owner negligence, which may include failing to properly maintain or repair the aircraft, forging repair or maintenance logs, failing to routinely inspect the aircraft, allowing unlicensed and/or inexperienced pilots to operate the aircraft, and more
  • Helicopter manufacturer negligence, failing to identify and address defects and hazardous conditions before making the helicopter available to the public, failing to issue recalls for known problems, etc.
  • And more
Possible Helicopter Accident Injuries

Helicopter accidents can lead to extensive injuries, which can include the following:

  • Traumatic brain injuries and other head injuries, such as skull fractures, brain hemorrhaging, concussions, etc.
  • Facial injuries, including eye injuries, broken teeth, broken nose, broken jaw, and more
  • Neck injuries
  • Back injuries
  • Internal decapitation
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Broken bones and dislocations
  • Nerve injuries, possibly resulting in chronic pain issues
  • Burns ranging in severity
  • Severed limbs
  • Crushing injuries
  • Psychological harm, including PTSD, anxiety, panic, and more

In most instances of helicopter crashes, incidents are catastrophic. The helicopter blades can potentially enter the passenger compartment and severely injure occupants. In many instances, the helicopter actually bursts into flames upon impact. In general, helicopter crashes are fatal, and any survivors may be left suffering from permanent disability.

Liability for Helicopter Crashes

Liability for these crashes will be specifically based on the cause of the incident. The Huntington Beach incident is still under investigation, so liability is unclear. Some of the parties/entities that could face liability (and could ultimately be sued) include the following:

  • Negligent event organizers
  • Negligent helicopter owners
  • Negligent helicopter pilots
  • Negligent helicopter manufacturers
  • Negligent third-parties, like repair companies and maintenance companies
  • And more

This is all based on the specific duty of care owed to the parties involved. For example, helicopter pilots have a duty to operate the aircraft safely to prevent incidents that can affect their passengers. Similarly, helicopter owners have the duty to ensure that their aircraft is properly maintained/repaired so that it does not pose a risk in flight. Helicopter manufacturers have the duty to ensure that their aircrafts are free of any defects that could result in catastrophic failure during flight.
