TRUBLUE Auto Belay Devices Recall Class Action Lawsuit
As of August 22, 2024, Head Rusk Technologies has issued a recall for around 220 TRUBLUE Speed Auto Belay Devices. This is a separate recall from the iQ Auto Belay Devices by Head Rush Technologies, which were recalled on June 20, 2024. The TRUBLUE Speed devices pose a risk of injury or death if the backup brake fails to activate. So far, we know of at least one incident where a climber ended up with a broken ankle due to a fall caused by this product.
The recalled devices are gray with a blue handle, which come in two sizes – 12.5 m and 16 m. The 16 m version of the item has a blue webbing handgrip, while the 12.5 m version’s handgrip is made from black webbing. On a label located on the side of the handle is the model no: TRUBLUE Speed TBSD150-20 and the serial number. Auto belay devices that are under recall are have serial numbers within the following range: TBSD00098 through TBSD01180.
It’s disturbing enough that one belay device made by this company was recalled already, but here we are, facing the same issue with a second product. This is unacceptable, considering the injuries that are associated with climbing-related fall accidents. Though Head Rush Technologies is offering a free repair to affected customers, this is not enough to compensate those who are suffering from one or more injuries.

Failures of any sort in a piece of climbing gear or equipment can put the user at risk of severe injuries with permanent complications. That’s why problems during the manufacturing process cannot be tolerated, as there is potential to cause injury or death to countless climbing enthusiasts. An auto belay device with a mechanical defect or design flaw can cause all sorts of bodily harm, including:
- Fractures and broken bones
- Neck and back injuries
- Spinal cord damage
- Ruptured internal organs
- Traumatic brain injury from a concussion or skull fracture
- Soft tissue injuries (damage to ligaments, tendons, and muscles)
- Chronic pain in the arms and legs
- Dislocated knee or shoulder
- Loss of hearing or vision problems
- Permanent nerve damage
- Death
Falling off a mountain or climbing wall has the potential to cause death or permanent disability, so please seek medical attention immediately. Calling 911 is the best course of action, as attempting to move yourself (or move the injured person) can worsen the injury or cause other health issues. Along with medical treatment, please do the following:
- Save all your medical records and keep them in safe place, along with documents showing your monetary losses (days off from work, property damage, etc.).
- Document the emotional trauma resulting from the accident, which can cause mental health issues like insomnia, panic attacks, anxiety, and phobias you did not have prior to the accident.
- Make sure to report the accident to the manufacturer, but turn down anything they try to offer you, like a refund or replacement product. Accepting a remedy from the manufacturer can compromise your right to file a lawsuit for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other crucial damages.
- Contact a climbing accident injury lawyer with experience in claims against negligent manufacturers.
