1 Dead after Armed Robbery at Luxury High-Rise in DTLA – Property Owner Liability for Apartment Building Robberies

PROPERTY OWENER LIABILITIES LAWYER

1 Dead after Armed Robbery at Luxury High-Rise in DTLA

One person has died after being shot during a robbery at a downtown Los Angeles high-rise apartment building on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred just after 4:30pm. Three men armed with guns entered an apartment and demanded property from the victim. After an argument, the victim was fatally shot. The victim’s identity has not been released. Two of the robbers fled on foot, and a third robber fled in a vehicle, according to police.

The incident was reported at 1000 W. 8th Street, which is the address of the Thea at Metropolis apartment building; this building was the site of another fatal shooting almost two years ago.

Potential Injuries Resulting from Shooting Incidents

Gunshot wounds can be very dangerous. Some of the possible injuries that could occur as a result could include the following:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Neck injuries and back injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries, which could lead to paralysis
  • Organ damage
  • Hemorrhaging

Ultimately, this depends on where the gunshot injury occurred. If the gunshot affected a major organ, the consequences can be fatal.

Who is Liable?

This is a very important question. Of course, the attacker could be held liable for his or her actions and could face criminal charges. However, other parties or entities could be liable for their negligence. The shooting incident mentioned above is the second incident in the last two years. Therefore, the property owner could be liable for failing to ensure that they had appropriate security, surveillance, alarm systems, etc. especially after previous incidents. Liability is based on the concept of premise liability. Although property owners may argue that they could not have known that the shooting would happen, property owners have the duty to ensure that their entire premises remain safe of any risks or hazards. As soon as one incident occurs, then the property owner must take action to prevent any further incidents. For more information about your right to file a lawsuit against the apartment building owners for harm resulting from a robbery, contact us today. The property owners should be held liable for failing to have appropriate security and surveillance.

How Long Do I Have to Sue?

All claims are subject to a statute of limitations, or a deadline to sue. If claimants do not file their claims on time, they run the risk of losing their right to sue entirely. So, how long do you have to file your claim? In California, personal injury claims and wrongful death claims are normally subject to a two-year statute of limitations, meaning that claimants will only have two years to take action and file their claims.
