Boar’s Head Recalls Products Due to Listeria Outbreak

Boars Head Recalls Products Due to Listeria Outbreak

Recently, there was a recall of 100 tons of Boar’s Head products after at least 2 people died and 34 others were hospitalized throughout 13 states. On July 30, 2024, the recall was expanded to include 7 million pounds of their ready-to-eat products. The latest update to the recall includes an additional 71 products made between the dates of May 10 and July 29; these include Boar’s Head brand and Old Country brand Virginia ham, bologna, and beef salami.

Reportedly, the outbreak was identified after a liverwurst sample collected in Maryland tested positive for listeria. Additional tests showed that the bacteria was the same strain that was reported to be causing illnesses between late May and July.

The company decided to expand their recall to include all products produced at their Jarratt, Virginia facility. The production of ready-to-eat foods has also been stopped at this facility.

Affected meat was distributed to stores around the country as well as to stores in Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and the Cayman Islands.

Consumers who may still have the recalled products in their homes are urged to not eat the products and discard them or return them to stores for a refund. Health officials are also urging affected consumers to thoroughly clean and sanitize their refrigerators to prevent other foods from getting contaminated.

What is Listeria?

Listeria is bacteria that can be found in soil, water, and animal feces. People can get infected with listeria bacteria when they eat contaminated foods, such as processed foods like soft cheeses, hot dogs, and deli meats contaminated after processing.

Listeria infection is associated with some of the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Chills
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

If the inspection spreads to the nervous system, additional symptoms could occur, including the following:

  • Headache
  • Changes in alertness or confusion
  • Stiff neck
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions

Although symptoms can start just days after eating contaminated food, it can sometimes take 30 days or more to start showing symptoms.

When infections go untreated, complications can include blood infections and meningitis, for example. Listeria infections can be fatal.

Can I File a Lawsuit for Harm Caused by Listeria Infection?

Yes, you could have the right to file a lawsuit. If you suffered a listeria infection after consuming any Boar’s Head products, you could have the right to file a lawsuit. Boar’s Head could be found liable of all harm associated with the contaminated food. Liability will be based on the concept of negligence. In general, food manufacturers have a duty to ensure that their products meet all safety standards and are clear of any contaminants that could harm consumers. Food manufacturers should ensure that all equipment used for production is routinely cleaned and sanitized. It is also important for food to be tested to be able to quickly identify any issues.

When food manufacturers fail to keep their food products safe for consumers to eat, they can be liable for all resulting harm and could be sued.
