Unlucky in life? New data says move to Minnesota in 2022

We all have an unlucky day once in a while, but what if the state you live in actually played a part in your bad fortune? If you’re looking to turn it around in 2022, consider a move to the Midwest as data points to Minnesota being the ‘Luck’ capital of the USA!

After a survey of over 2,000 American’s revealed that almost half consider themselves unlucky, and two thirds believe in ‘luck’, we decided to put together a list of the most fortuitous, or ‘lucky’, states to live in across North America.

We analyzed thousands of data points from four predefined ‘luck’ metrics to determine the luckiest states in the country: the chance of winning the Powerball, the average number of emergency room admissions, the number of federally declared natural disasters and the average number of fatal road traffic collisions per state.

Living in Minnesota, your chances of winning the Powerball are 56 times better than in Texas which, coupled with fewer accidents resulting in visits to the emergency room than other states, makes it the luckiest state to live in. Although, the state where you have the  best chance of a lottery win is Delaware, according to our research. But don’t all rush there at once, as the state has a pretty high rate of accidents!

The least accident prone state is Arizona with the lowest emergency room admission rate, and coupled with 13 Powerball winners in 2021* it’s reached second spot on our ranking of the luckiest states to live in.

The top 10 luckiest states are:

  1. Minnesota
  2. Rhode Island
  3. Wisconsin
  4. Maryland
  5. Delaware
  6. New Jersey
  7. Connecticut
  8. Idaho
  9. Massachusetts
  10. Iowa

Our study revealed that Arkansas however, is the ‘unluckiest’ state, with a higher rate of trips to the emergency room and fatal road traffic collisions than many other states, and no recorded Powerball winners in 2021*. But it’s Louisiana that takes the top spot for the most accident prone state, with more visits to the emergency room than any other state**. Texas and Oklahoma have also been ranked as two of the most unlucky states as they have experienced more federally recorded natural disasters since 1953 than any other states, except California***.

The top 5 unluckiest states are:

  1. Arkansas
  2. Oklahoma
  3. Louisiana
  4. Texas
  5. Florida

Whilst living in a ‘luckier’ state might give you a better chance of winning the Powerball, it doesn’t mean that you won’t have an accident and end up in the emergency room, and these accidents can be costly. The state people reside in can have a big impact on how much they pay in monthly premiums, as it’s one of the factors an insurer will use to assess risk.

Although the state a person lives in shouldn’t stop them from getting a policy, it could mean that individuals living in certain states could end up paying more for health or life insurance than others. For example, a 42-year old could pay almost 35 percent more for their health insurance per month in Ohio, compared with if they were based in Arizona****.

Farid Yaghoubtil, Senior Trial Attorney at Downtown L.A Law Group, says:

Some states are more advantageous to live in than others, from higher chances of winning the Powerball to a lower occurrence of natural disasters and the lowest accident rates in the country, however visits to the emergency room can be serious and living in a ‘luckier’ state does not mean you won’t encounter them.

We are dedicated to protecting and serving the rights of individuals who have been injured in an accident resulting from the negligence or wrongdoing of others. Through carrying out this research we hope to highlight the importance of adequate medical insurance, because although some states appear ‘more fortunate’ than others, accidents do happen and the cost of these can be extremely high.”
