Within just one hour of the fire starting, there was already severe damage to the Villa Calimesa mobile home park. The fire ultimately destroyed most of the Villa Calimesa mobile home park (roughly three-fourths of the structures), where two people lost their lives. At one point, a second mobile home park nearby, a power grid, and a railway were all threatened by the fire.
The fire reached 100% containment by Monday evening.
As mentioned above, the fire started after a trash truck dropped its burning load of trash following company protocol; the goal of dumping the flaming trash load was to reduce potential damage to the truck. The truck was a part of CR&R Environmental Services, which collects trash in Calimesa.
