Power Slap Competition Causing Brain Injury – Class Action Lawsuit

Power Slap Competition Causing Brain Injury - Class Action Lawsuit sue liability lawyer attorney compensation

Power Slap is a slap fighting competition and promotion company founded by Dana White, chief executive officer of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The event became known to the general public through the reality show, Power Slap: Road to the Title. Understandably, the combat sport is highly controversial, with critics using words like “stupid,” “distasteful,” and “not a real sport” to describe these competitions. The show was canceled after the first season, but White continues to hold power slapping events, which are shown on the online video platform, Rumble.

Frankly, the allure of entertainment that’s devoid of intellectual value is something we can all relate to, and watching people slap each with mutual consent may be enjoyable to some people. And there have been slap fighting competitions and leagues before Dana White popularized the sport with his reality show. The problem is, numerous doctors, including neuroscientists, have pointed out the risk of traumatic brain injury from the repeated, forceful blows to the head that is a vital component of these events.

White, who is known for courting controversy, responded to his critics by saying, “We spend the money to make sure we have two healthy people in there, proper medical attention during and after the fight.” However, “proper medical attention during and after the fight” does not mean that the contestants are warned of concussion and other forms of brain injury ahead of time. The failure to provide warning of TBI and other complications is a major legal issue that we are currently investigating on behalf of slap fighting injury victims.

Why is Power Slapping So Dangerous?

To answer this question, we need to look at the rules for how these fights are orchestrated. Essentially, all slap fighting leagues use similar rules, but for the sake of simplicity, we will stick to the process of how things work in Power Slapping Leagues.

Participants face off in a battle of three rounds, where each player has 60 seconds to deliver an open-handed slap to their opponent. There are rules governing how the slap must be delivered, like making sure the slap is below the eye and that you don’t lead with the palm. For the person being slapped, they are forbidden from flinching, tucking in their chin, or raising their shoulders. In essence, any effort to defend themselves from the impact of a forceful blow to the head is against the rules.

After the slap is delivered, the player that is slapped has 60 seconds to recover before they have their turn to slap the other person. There is no knock out rule, so the fights must go 3 rounds, meaning each player is forced to endure the full force of an open-handed slap several times within a few minutes. The winner is declared by judges who use a 10-point grading system, which includes each player’s reaction to the slap and their recovery time after each slap. Thus, the participants are pressured to “get back in the ring” as soon as possible and act like nothing is wrong, even if they are badly injured.

In the next section, we will go over the health risks associated with Power Slap and other slap fighting leagues according to medical professionals.

Health Complications to Slap Fighting Competitors

The reality show, Power Slap: Road to the Title, was controversial from day one, and concerns were expressed by numerous experts, including neuroscientist and former pro wrestler, Christopher Nowinski. According to Nowinski, one of the show’s participants show signs of the fencing response after he was slapped, which indicate serious injury to the brain.

Another neurologist, Nikolas Evangelou, said the show was a “recipe for disaster” due to the potential for “permanent disruption to brain function.” Evengelou attributes the high risk of brain damage to the impact on the head from an angle, which “can cause rotational forces on the brain.”

It’s worth noting that even athletes that participate in combat sports have spoken out against slap fighting. Boxer Ryan Garcia wrote that the show is a “horrible idea and it needs to be stopped.” Even UFC fighter Sean O’Malley said that he refused to watch the reality show because of its association with traumatic brain injuries.

As we mentioned before, White has responded to critics by saying that he takes precautionary measures to minimize the possibility of brain injury to the participants. However, leading experts on brain damage from around the world are not convinced that White is doing his due diligence to keep people safe. Dr. Bennet Omalu, one of the world’s most respected experts on brain injury responded to White’s defense of Power Slap by saying “It is possible that a participant could die from this. Somebody could die or suffer catastrophic brain damage and become a vegetable.” Omalu went on to state that White’s assertion that slap fighting can be safe is like saying “you will make a loaded gun safe.”

Filing a Concussion Warning over Face-Slap Fighting Lawsuit

If you were diagnosed with a form of TBI due to a concussion that was caused by slap fighting, you may have grounds to seek monetary damages from Power Slap. Because of the sport’s popularity, you are not alone when it comes to permanent injury to your brain as a result of being open-hand slapped repeatedly. While you can file a claim on your own, it may be of benefit to join a class action lawsuit with other injury victims. That way, you have a preponderance of evidence based on cases involving many participants. With so many people suffering in the same manner, it’s hard to deny the harm that’s associated with slap fighting, and how Dana White and other promoters failed to exercise reasonable care.

Statute of Limitations to Sue Power Slap

As a general rule, the deadline in California to sue an individual or entity for negligence resulting in TBI is 2 years, starting from the date of injury or the accident. In the case of brain damage from power slapping, this is a complicated issue, as injuries to the brain are not obvious right away. For many claimants, the statute of limitations is based on the day that they received a diagnosis of traumatic brain injury or another condition associated with slap fighting. However, each case is different with its own set of circumstances. That’s why you should contact a Power Slap concussion failure to warn lawyer immediately, who can help you figure out how long you have for a Power Slap League concussion and brain injury lawsuit.

We all know that sports like wrestling, boxing, and MMA come with a high risk of injury, even for the most seasoned athletes. But there is no denying that many of the participants were denied information related to head trauma and concussions for many years. Tragically, this has resulted in many former athletes suffering from severe brain damage that took away their ability to think clearly, participate in daily tasks, and have a normal and healthy relationship with their loved ones.

As attorneys, we can’t go back in time and take away the injuries that you sustained from a slap-fighting event. However, we can go after Power Slap and other entities that failed in their duty of care to the public. If you are interested in filing a failure to warn lawsuit for brain injury caused by slap fighting, we will charge you $0 upfront, as we are a contingency-based law firm. That means we defer all legal fees until the end of your lawsuit, when our expenses are paid at the same time as your settlement check.
