Forensic samples of the gun used by George Zimmerman on the fatal night of Trayvon Martin’s shooting indicate that only Zimmerman’s DNA was on the gun’s grip. Reports by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement on Wednesday suggested that while the 17-year-old Martin’s DNA was nowhere to be found on the gun’s grip, tests to determine whether Martin’s DNA was on the gun’s holster were inconclusive.
The tests showed that the gun had DNA from at least 3 people, one of which was definitely Zimmerman. The test conclusively showed that no Martin DNA was on the gun.
Zimmerman, 28 is currently facing second degree murder charges for the killing of Trayvon Martin in what has now grabbed national headlines. Zimmerman was heading a voluntary neighborhood watch while he witnessed and followed Martin in the gated community in Sanford. Zimmerman is claiming self-defense and that he feared for his life as Martin got on top of him and slammed his head to the pavement. He also alleges that Martin covered his mouth and nose in an attempt to suffocate him.
Zimmerman is claiming that he believed his life was in danger when he grabbed the gun from its holster and fatally shot Martin in the chest in February 26. If convicted, Zimmerman faces life in prison for the second degree murder of Trayvon Martin.
