Breaking News: 2 women have died after a devastating skydiving accident that is being referred to as a freak accident. The incident occurred on Friday, August 2, 2024 in Perris in the Inland Empire. Kayla Kieko Black, 28, was pronounced dead at a hospital on Sunday. The skydiving instructor, Devrey LaRiccia Chase, also 28, died on Friday also at a hospital. Reportedly, the victims were caught in a pair of “dust devils” during a routine jump. “Dust devils” are small columns of air that pick u dust/debris from the ground on hot days; these are generally harmless.
The victims missed the first “dust devil” but hit the second one. They were about 25 to 30 feet in the air, and the canopy was sent downward. Both victims slammed into the ground. They were transported to local hospitals where they later died days apart.

Victims of skydiving incidents can fall from many feet in the air and sustain devastating injuries that are often fatal. Some of these injuries could include traumatic brain injuries, skull fractures, neck injuries, back injuries, spinal cord injuries, severed spinal cord, crushing injuries, complex fractures, impalement, severed limbs, etc.
Can I File a Lawsuit after a Skydiving Accident?Yes, you could have the right to file a lawsuit for wrongful death after a skydiving accident. Although this activity comes with a high risk, you could still have the right to sue on the basis of negligence. Can I sue the skydiving company? The skydiving teacher worked with Skydive Perris. These companies have the duty to ensure that their instructors have clear background checks, have the proper credentials, are appropriately trained, and follow all safety protocols. These companies should also always be aware of weather conditions so that they can avoid skydiving in risky conditions, including rescheduling dives in unfavorable weather conditions.
If claimants can prove that the incident occurred because of the actions (or lack of actions) of the instructor or of the skydiving company, then claimants could have the right to sue.
Based on preliminary information about the incident, it appears that there was no plane incident or malfunction; the instructor was simply unable to avoid the second dust devil.
If you are unsure of whether you could pursue a claim, please do not hesitate to reach out to the legal team here at our law firm as soon as possible. Our team is ready to evaluate your claim and help you get justice.
