Big-Rig Ignites — Southbound 5 Freeway in Sun Valley Closes
A vehicle accident that involved a big-rig caused the truck to combust on the southbound 5 freeway near Sun Valley. To protect other drivers from the combusted truck, officials closed all lanes on the freeway on Friday morning, January 26, 2018.
The crash happened at around 3:40 a.m. on Friday near Sunland Blvd. when the driver lost control of the big-rig and crashed into a center divider. The truck ignited and caught on fire, according to the California Highway Patrol’s traffic incident log.
The violent impact created a massive fire and split the big-rig in two pieces. Firefighters responded and between twenty-nine of them, they extinguished the flames 26 minutes.
The big-rig’s cargo was exclusively cheese. The crash and the fire left the cheese all over the highway, and the cheese near the truck was converted into fondue on the street rather than in a dining room.
The driver was taken to the hospital in good condition. Investigators have not yet talked to the driver and have not yet figured out what caused the accident.
Two lanes of the freeway reopened at 9 a.m.
