The Risk of Food Contaminated with Hepatitis A

Exposure to the Hepatitis A virus, including exposure from contaminated food, can result in Hepatitis A, which is a contagious liver disease. Hepatitis A can range from a mild illness that lasts just a few weeks to a serious illness that lasts many months. In general, onset of symptoms associated with the illness starts within 15 to 50 days of exposure.

Symptoms include the following:

  • Abdominal pain (including upset stomach and stomachaches)
  • Abnormal liver tests
  • Dark urine
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Jaundice (Yellow skin/eyes)
  • Joint pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pale stool
  • Vomiting
  • Liver failure (this is rare and usually occurs in those with pre-existing illnesses, like chronic liver disease, or who are immunocompromised)

For most people that get Hepatitis A, the illness resolves in just months. In fact, many people never know that they have Hepatitis A as their symptoms remain minor. However, people with pre-existing medical conditions or who have a weak immune system can develop acute liver failure.

Can I Sue?

Yes – if you or a loved one suffered harm associated with any food products that were contaminated, you could have grounds to file a lawsuit. You can sue the product manufacturer for failing to keep their products safe for consumers. For more information about the legal options available to you, contact the experts here at our law firm as soon as possible.

Can I Recover Compensation?

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost earnings
  • Pain and suffering
