Listeria infection is a foodborne bacterial illness resulting from eating improperly processed deli meats, unpasteurized milk products, and other contaminated food products like raw vegetables, meat, etc. The bacteria can be found in water, soil, and in animal feces. Symptoms of listeria infection include fever, chills, nausea, diarrhea, and muscle aches. These symptoms can begin just a few days after eating contaminated food, although in some cases it may take up to 30 days to experience any symptoms of infection. If the infection is not treated, it may spread to the nervous system, which can lead to more severe symptoms, which can include headache, stiff neck, loss of balance, confusion, changes in alertness, and seizures, for example.
Pregnant women, their unborn babies, people over 65 years old, and people with weakened immune systems are at highest risk of suffering significant harm due to listeria.
