What are Meningiomas?

A meningioma refers to a tumor that forms in the meninges. The meninges are protective membranes that cover the brain and the spinal cord. In general, meningioma tumors are benign; however, because of the location in which they appear, they can be very dangerous and difficult to treat. They can lead to many serious complications and can require invasive surgery and aggressive treatment.

These tumors can appear on the brain’s surface, between the two sides of the brain, within the chambers of the brain, in the bones at the base of the skull, on the skull base behind the eyes, on the nerves connecting the brain to the nose, on the underside of the brain, near the optic nerve, near the pituitary gland, in/around eye sockets, where the brain connects to the brainstem, in the spine, and against the spinal cord, for instance. Depending on where the tumor is located, affected women could experience a number of complications, which can include seizures, sensory loss, motor weakness, difficulties with language, cognitive impairment, hydrocephalus and related issues, like headaches, vision problems, and nausea, compression of the auditory nerve, leading to hearing problems/loss, balance problems, etc., and compression of the brainstem, which can affect vital functions and be life-threatening. Although most meningiomas are benign, the complications caused by the tumors can be so severe that affected women may be unable to work or complete normal daily tasks.

Approximately 85% of all cases are Grade I Meningiomas, which are noncancerous tumors with a slow growth rate. Grade II Meningiomas refer to atypical tumors with a higher recurrence rate. Grade III Meningiomas are cancerous and have the highest recurrence rate.

About the Surgeries Required to Address Meningiomas

Surgery is the most common treatment for meningiomas caused by the Depo Provera. In most cases, removal of the tumor provides immediate relief. Of course, meningioma removal surgeries come with risks, which can include the following:

  • Infections
  • Blood loss or hemorrhaging
  • Leaking fluids
  • Nerve damage
  • Complications due to anesthesia
  • And more

It is also possible for the tumor to reappear after removal, which could require additional surgeries or even more aggressive treatment.

What if the tumors cannot be addressed by surgeries? Some tumors are located in areas considered difficult to treat (or where the risks of surgery are far greater than the chance of success) or reappears after surgery. In these cases, the patient may have to undergo aggressive treatment, which may include radiation therapy. Similarly, malignant tumors must be treated with radiation therapy. In some cases, patients may have to go through both radiation and surgery.

Without a doubt, going through surgery can result in extensive psychological harm, which may include depression, anxiety, panic, fear, post-traumatic stress, and more.
