Costco Chicken Products Recall Due to Possible Listeria Contamination
More chicken products have been added to a recall for ready-to eat chicken items sold at Costco due to concerns of listeria contamination. The most recent recall is for the following products:
- Readywise 110 Serving Emergency Protein Bucket
- Red’s Southwestern Grill Chicken Mini Burritos
- El Monterey Mexican Grill Chicken & Cheese Taquitos
- Rana Chicken Truffle Carbonara
- Tagliatelle Grilled White Chicken & Portabello Mushroom Sauce
Most of the recalled items are connected to a larger recall of ready-to-eat chicken products by BrucePac, which were contaminated with listeria. This includes Readywise’s serving buckets, which are shelf-stable packages of prepared foods with a shelf life of 25 years, making them ideal prepper / emergency supplies.
According to Readywise, the recall was due to potential contamination by one of its suppliers. Consumers should not consume the product, but instead, return it to any Costco location for a full refund.
Red’s advised that the grilled chicken burritos were the only products sold by their company under recall, which they initiated as a cautionary measure. These items can also be returned to Costco for a refund.
The Rana and El Monterey product recalls are part of the Class 1 recall on cooked chicken products by the Department of Agriculture. These items were produced at BrucePac’s facility in Durant, Oklahoma. Rather than consuming the food, consumers should take it back to Costco to receive a refund.
The list of products affected by the USDA recall of BrucePac chicken products lists hundreds of items that contain ready-to-eat chicken meat produced from May 31, 2024 to October 8, 2024. Aside from being sold at Costco, the products were sent to various other distributors, including, restaurants and schools.
The Department of Agriculture says there have been no reported cases of listeriosis so far, and the contamination of meat produced in Durant, OK was discovered through routine testing.

No matter how the contamination of Costco chicken products was found, listeria can cause significant health symptoms, especially for babies, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems. Common symptoms of listeria include:
- Chills
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
In most cases, you will experience symptoms within a few days of consuming food that’s contaminated with listeria. However, it can actually take 30 days or longer for some people to have the first signs of listeriosis. The key is to treat the problem early on and prevent the infection from entering your nervous system. When that happens, you may have the following symptoms:
- Headaches
- Loss of balance
- Stiffness in your neck
- Convulsions
- Confusion / reduced ability to be alert or focus
For the pregnant mother, a foodborne illness caused by listeria may only produce mild symptoms. However, the baby is much more at risk, as they can die in the womb or have a severe, potentially fatal infection within just a few days of being born. An infant may show the following signs if they are infected with listeria:
- Irritability
- Fever
- Little interest in feeding
- Vomiting
- Breathing problems
Listeria is a genus of bacteria that’s found in animal feces, soil, and water. A listeria infection can develop in people that eat the following foods:
- Contaminated meat
- Unpasteurized milk (or foods made with unpasteurized dairy products)
- Raw vegetables that are contaminated from fertilizer (either from soil or manure)
- Processed foods such as hot dogs, deli meats, and soft cheese that were contaminated at the processing plant
Unborn babies and infants contract the infection from their mother, so it’s essential to keep an eye out for symptoms of listeriosis in babies. Otherwise, a listeria infection can cause fatal complications, like meningitis or a blood infection.

A foodborne illness injury case has a deadline of 2 years, starting from when you found out about the infection. That may seem like a lot of time, but it’s very easy to exceed the statute of limitations for a lawsuit if you don’t initiate a claim right away. With that in mind, contact us immediately if you got sick from a Costco chicken product that was contaminated with listeria. Please note that the courts will most likely invalidate your right to monetary damages if you miss the 2-year window to file a lawsuit.
Contact DTLA Law GroupListeria and other bacteria can have devastating consequences when they contaminate processed foods that are sold at supermarkets and big box stores. That’s why recalls must be announced as soon as there are signs of contamination. The bigger issue, however, is how the product was contaminated in the first place. When potentially deadly bacteria is found in batches of processed meat, the manufacturer must be held accountable.
