Many people believe that football is inherently dangerous because it is a contact sport. However, there are many different potential causes of football injuries. Some possible causes of football injuries can include the following:
- Defective helmets
- Defective protective equipment
- Poorly maintained turf
- And more
Head injuries are very common in school football. These can include concussions and traumatic brain injuries. Traumatic brain injuries, specifically, could result in cognitive impairment and other disabilities; of course, these injuries could also be fatal. In addition to these injuries, other injuries related to football can include cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, dislocations, fractures, lacerations, scrapes, bruises, and more.
Can I File a Lawsuit?Yes – you could be eligible to file a lawsuit for the harm that your child suffered during a football game. In fact, you could file a lawsuit against the school district. This is because school district is responsible for ensuring that students remain safe while on their premises. When it comes to student sports, school districts are responsible for ensuring that equipment is safe, turf is safe to play on, and that the teams meet all requirements necessary (i.e., that students are clear to play, that there are multiple medical staff present, etc.). When these schools fail to keep students safe, they can be liable for all resulting harm and could be sued.
Although every claim is different, some of the compensation available for high school football injuries could include the following:
- Medical costs
- Lost income
- Pain and suffering
- Punitive damages
- Wrongful death benefits (including funeral and burial costs and loss of consortium)
- Legal fees
