15 People Killed in SUV Crash with a Semi-Truck
On Tuesday, March 2, 2021, Southern California got news of a mass casualty incident in Holtville, which is roughly 125 miles from San Diego. At least 15 people have been confirmed dead.
According to reports, a total of 28 people were inside the SUV – a Ford Expedition (red). The SUV struck a semi-truck carrying gravel (t-bone accident). Four of the victims were transported via helicopters to Desert Regional Medical Center. Seven other victims were transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center; one of these victims died after arriving to the hospital. Three victims ended up being transported to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley.
Allegedly, the victims of the accidents were being treated for different injuries – most of which were life threatening. Some victims had severe head and chest injuries while others were dealing with fractures. So far, all victims who remain hospitalized are in stable condition.
According to officials, children were involved in the accident – but further details are unavailable.
The Border Patrol responded to the incident upon the request of the local police agencies; there has been no confirmation of whether the 28 people in the SUV were undocumented immigrants.
Without a doubt, the incident was devastating – more than half of the people involved in the incident died and all survivors suffered devastating injuries. It is unclear whether the driver of the SUV survived the incident. The driver of the semi-truck survived the incident. According to initial reports, the semi-truck driver was not at-fault for the incident.

The specific details surrounding the accident are still under investigation. So far, the driver of the SUV is believed to have caused the incident – by entering the intersection directly in the path of the semi-truck. Based on this, the driver of the SUV is likely at-fault for the incident.
Some other common causes of accidents include the following:
- Failing to follow traffic laws and signals
- Driving without a license (and without experience)
- Driving an unsafe vehicle
- Driving recklessly
- Driving distracted
Regardless of the cause of the incident, victims could suffer significant harm.

T-bone accidents, unfortunately, are considered to be among the most dangerous types of accidents. These incidents can result in multiple injuries, some of which could include the following:
- Head injuries
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Neck injuries (including whiplash)
- Back injuries (including herniated discs)
- Spinal cord injuries
- Severed limbs
- Impaling injuries
- Crushing injuries
- Fractures
- Punctured organs
- Lacerations
- Sprains and strains
- Scrapes and bruises
- Internal bleeding
These injuries are possible even when the maximum occupancy is respected and all passengers are wearing seatbelts. The fact that the SUV was packed more than three times over capacity likely contributed to the severity of the injuries victims sustained.
