Attack on Greyhound Bus Leaves 1 Dead, Multiple Injured in Northern California – Greyhound Bus Injury Attorney

Attack on Greyhound Bus Leaves 1 Dead, Multiple Injured in Northern California – Greyhound Bus Injury Attorney

A shooting incident on a Greyhound bus in Oroville, which is approximately 65 miles north of Sacramento, left at least one person dead and several others injured. The incident was reported after 7:30pm on Wednesday. According to 911 calls, the suspect was shooting inside the bus, which was parked at an ampm. When police arrived, they found five people shot. One person died at the scene. Although the incident remains under investigation, police stated that the suspect had been acting erratically since he boarded the bus in Redding and became aggravated as passengers were exiting the bus.

Based on additional 911 calls, police were able to locate the suspect inside a nearby Walmart, where he was arrested. Reportedly, he was unclothed and still acting erratically.

The shooter has since been identified as Asaahdi Coleman, 21-years-old, with a juvenile criminal record. According to police, Coleman can be considered a transient, with a last known address in Sacramento. Coleman has a warrant in Alameda County for possession of a firearm and is wanted by police. Even with this history, he was allowed to purchase a ticket and board the bus.

Without a doubt, the shooting is a tragedy. However, it highlights the risks that passengers face whenever they opt for ground transportation with a bus company like Greyhound instead of other transportation that is known for strict security (like air travel, for example). In fact, almost exactly a year ago, a similar incident occurred on a Greyhound bus, resulting in one death and at least five injuries.

Common Incidents in Greyhound Buses

When you think on an incident on a Greyhound bus, we automatically think of auto accidents. Without a doubt, any vehicle on the road, including a bus, can be involved in an auto accident at any time – either because of the negligence of the bus driver or any other driver on the road (and sometimes even the negligence of other parties). In addition, unsuspecting passengers could also experience slip and falls, trip and falls, and falling object incidents due to the specific conditions in the bus.

Although violent incidents are less common, they are still possible. These incidents can include the following:

  • Shooting incidents
  • Stabbing incidents
  • Assault and battery
  • Sexual assault

These incidents typically consist of passengers attacking other passengers.

The Issue of Safety

According to Greyhound, they prioritize the safety of their passengers. However, if safety was really a priority, then these violent incidents among passengers would simply not be an issue. In fact, Greyhound, has minimal security checks – practically anyone can get on a bus as long as they have a ticket.

Some issues that Greyhound faces include the following:

  • Not using metal detectors at bus stations (including walk-through detectors and wands)
  • Not properly training their personnel on security protocol to identify suspicious behavior in passengers
  • Not enforcing their no-gun policy (not subjecting passengers to searches like pat downs or bag checks)
  • Not identifying suspicious passengers before allowing them to board the bus
  • Not having security on the bus

Other Possible Incidents – Bus Accidents

In addition to the different incidents mentioned above, it is important that we do not forget the dangers of bus crashes. Bus crashes are relatively common. A recent incident involving a Greyhound bus traveling from Bakersfield to Fresno left 21 people injured. The accident occurred at approximately 3am in Tulare, California – off Highway 99 near Avenue 260. According to the authorities, the bus drifted off the road, went through a chain link fence, and crashed on its side at a nearby parking lot. There were 34 passengers on the bus when the incident occurred. The 21 injured people, many of which were children, were transported to local hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. The incident is still under investigation; however, considering that the bus reportedly drifted off the road, it is possible that the driver fell asleep at the wheel. If you or a loved one suffered harm in a Greyhound bus crash, it is essential that you seek legal assistance as soon as possible. You could have grounds to file a Greyhound bus crash lawsuit.

Can Greyhound be Liable?

Can Greyhound be liable for the harm resulting from violence among passengers? Yes – Greyhound could be liable. This is because Greyhound, like other transportation companies, have a duty to keep their passengers safe. Failing to do so can result in liability for any resulting harm after an incident. Of course, other parties/entities could be liable for the harm that a passenger suffers on a Greyhound bus. Ultimately, liability depends on the specific details of the incident.

Can I Sue Greyhound?

If you or a member of your family suffered injuries as a result of the shooting incident mentioned above, or any other violent incident, you could have grounds to file a lawsuit against Greyhound. For more information about your right to sue Greyhound, the best thing that you can do is to speak to a lawyer experienced in Greyhound bus incidents.
