Public Safety Notice on Fires Caused by Unit Pack Power Bike Battery
A public safety notice has been issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for Unit Pack Power (UPP) e-bike batteries. The manufacturer is Shenzhen Unit Pack Power Technology Co. Ltd, a company in China. The lithium-ion batteries are black and triangular in shape and are used to convert standard pedal bicycles into e-bikes.
These batteries put the user at risk of fire and burn hazards, and so far, there have been 13 reports of the batteries overheating. Of these incidents, 7 of them resulted in fires that caused substantial property damage. The incidents occurred in the U.S., but the CPSC is also aware of several fires in the U.K. that resulted from e-bike batteries by Unit Pack Power.
To verify whether you own one of these batteries, check the sides of the battery pack to see if it has either of the following number / letter codes: U004 BATTERY or UPPBATTERY. The product was sold between 2018 and April 2024 for approximately $280 to $730 by online retailers, such as AliExpress, Amazon, DHgate, eBay, Walmart, and through the manufacturer’s website at https://unitpackpower.net.
Shenzen Unit Pack Power has refused to recall the product, which is why the CPSC issued a safety notice on April 15, 2024. The commission has urged consumers to stop using the batteries immediately and dispose of them according to state or local ordinances. Safe disposal of the product is crucial, as batteries that are known to be hazardous cannot be thrown in the trash or in recycling boxes found at retailers, like home improvement stores.
A major red flag concerning UPP e-bike batteries is the lack of certification by an accredited organization, which guarantees that the product meets the appropriate safety standards. The CPSC warns consumers to steer clear of micromobility products that have not been certified for compliance by an accredited laboratory. Additionally, make sure you are present whenever you charge batteries for these products and do not leave them charging while you are asleep. Finally, only use the charger that was provided by the manufacturer when you purchased the battery.

Fire Injuries from a Defective e-Bike BatteryWe are already aware that multiple people ended up with serious damage to their property because of a fire caused by these batteries overheating. However, defective lithium ion batteries are also associated with severe injuries, such as:
- Severe burns
- Disfiguring injuries, like permanent scars
- Permanent damage to the skin, muscles and bones
- Never damage leading to paralysis
- Seizures
- Damage to the lungs and respiratory tract
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Loss of consciousness

- Death
Aside from your immediate injuries, you may also have long-term health complications that require lifetime medical treatment. Accidents caused by fires can also take away your ability to work and provide for your family. Tragically, some victims die from the impact of severe burns, CO poisoning and other potentially fatal injuries.
Restitution for Accident VictimsThose who are injured in an accident caused by an overheating UPP e-bike battery may have grounds to sue for the following damages:
- Medical expenses (current and future)
- Lost wages during the recovery period

Quick action, compelling evidence, and guidance from a personal injury lawyer are the keys to succeeding in a product liability lawsuit. If you were harmed in an accident that was caused by a defective e-bike battery, here are the steps we recommend:
- If you or your loved one sustained severe injuries, call 911 or go to an emergency room immediately.
- If you are not severely hurt, try and take photos or video of the injuries, damage to your home / other property, and the product that caused the accident.
- If there are witnesses that saw what happened, ask them for written statements or get their contact information (your lawyer can reach out to them later)
- Seek medical attention within 72 hours, as early intervention is the key to preventing permanent injury / health complications. In addition, going to a hospital within this timeframe is crucial to preserving your rights when it comes to a defective product lawsuit.
- Inform the manufacturer about the accident and make sure to decline any offers, like a refund of the purchase price or replacement battery. By accepting a remedy from the product maker, you could end up forfeiting your right to sue them in the future.
- As soon as possible, contact a lawyer who is experienced in lawsuits against negligent product manufacturers so that you can learn about your rights and legal options.
At the end of the day, money in itself is not enough to make up for what you went through. However, it’s essential to recover the costs that you incurred through no fault of your own. Furthermore, you are holding the manufacturer accountable and setting an example to others by suing for injuries and property loss that was caused by a dangerous product.
Of course, paying for a lawyer is impossible for most people who are already dealing with medical bills, time off from work, and other issues that affect their finances. Here at DTLA Law Group, we have a Zero Fee Guarantee policy that allows you to hire a product injury lawsuit attorney for $0. Instead of charging you for our expenses, we ask the manufacturer to cover these costs as a part of your settlement. That means we only get paid by winning your case, and you are not responsible for any legal fees if you don’t get paid from a defective product accident claim.
