Generac Portable Generator Finger Amputation Class Action Lawsuit Recall Lawyer
On July 29, 2021, Generac issued a recall for their 6500 and 8000-Watt portable generators. According to the recall, number 21-173, if the handle is unlocked, it can potentially pinch consumers’ fingers against the generator frame as it is being moved; this represents a significant risk of finger amputations and crushed fingers. The recall affects over 325,000 products total, with over 321,000 in the U.S. alone.

- GP6500 (model numbers G0076720, G0076800, G0076800R, G0076812, G0076830, G0076830R, G0076902, G0076902R, and G0076903)
- GP6500E (model numbers G0076820, G0076820R, and G0076822)
- GP8000E (model numbers G0076731, G0076751, G0076751R, G0076761, G0076761R, G0076861, and G0076861R)
- PRO 6500M (model numbers GP16505DMN and GP16505DMNR)
- PRO 6500E (model number GP16505DEN)
- HomeLink 6500E (model number G0068650, G0068651, and G0079960)
The generators included in the recall all have gas-powered engines. They have only two-wheels. The generators have a U-shaped handle (two-grip, flip-up pin-lock) that is designed to help move the generator; this is here the hazard is present. The unit type can be found on the front of the product. Model numbers are located on a label that is printed on the product.
The affected generators were available at multiple home improvement stores, hardware stores, as well as through online retailers. The generators were sold at the following: W.W. Grainger, True Value, Ravitsky Bros., Amazon, Ace Hardware, Napa Auto Parts, Northers Tool & Equipment, Orgill, Power Equipment Direct, Blain’s Farm & Fleet, City Electric Supply, Costco, Do it Best, Lowe’s Stores, Home Depot, and Fastenal. They were sold from June 2013 through June 2021; the generators ranged in price from $790 to $1,480.
Generac is urging all affected consumers to stop using the affected generators unless they have taken the necessary steps of inserting the locking pin and securing it before moving the generator. The company is offering a free repair kit to those affected by the recall.
There have been at least 8 reports of injuries caused by the defective generator – 7 of these reports consisted of finger amputations, and 1 of the reports resulted in a crushing finger injury.
