USC Bus Crashes into Metro Train Leaving 55 Injured – USC Bus Accident Lawyers
A USC bus and a LA Metro train collided on Tuesday April 30, 2024 leaving at least 55 people injured, according to officials.
The incident occurred on Exposition Boulevard and Watt Way in Exposition Park around noon. Reportedly, the USC shuttle bus crossed into the path of the Metro E Line train, which was traveling southbound. A total of 55 people were evaluated as a result of the crash. According to LAFD, 2 people were transported to local hospitals in serious condition, 16 others were transported to local hospitals in fair condition, and the remaining 37 people were treated and released on the scene of the crash.
There were only 2 people in the bus when the crash occurred; however, approximately 150 passengers were aboard the train. The 2 people on the bus – the driver and a passenger – were the ones in serious condition.
The incident remains under investigation.
Unfortunately, both train accidents and bus accidents are among the most dangerous types of accidents, just due to the type of vehicles. Possible Causes of Bus v. Train AccidentsAlthough the incident remains under investigation, we could review possible causes of the incident. Considering that the bus is the vehicle that crashed with the train, some possible causes to consider can include the following: bus driver medical emergencies, bus driver negligence (i.e., speeding, failing to yield when turning left, ignoring traffic signs and signals (including train warning signs), driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, driving while fatigued, bus mechanical failure/malfunction, etc.
Accident Liability – Is USC Liable for Harm Resulting from the Incident?USC offers students, faculty, guests, and the local community “an extensive network of free buses” that serve the main campus, the North University Park neighborhood, the university’s Parking Center, the Health Sciences Campus, and more. Buses are common carriers, so the owners/operators of these buses owe their passengers the highest duty of care. On this basis, USC could have strict liability when it comes to any injuries sustained by USC Transport Bus passengers (such as the one bus passenger injured in the accident discussed above). What about victims injured on the train? If the authorities determine that the accident was caused by USC’s negligence – whether this is due to driver error, mechanical failure, negligent hiring, or more – then injured train passengers could have grounds to sue USC. Depending on the circumstances, claimants could potentially have the right to sue LA Metro.
