On April 26, 2025, authorities found the body of Menash “Manny” Hidra, a fifty-three-year-old male, in his fifth-floor apartment unit at the Ashton Sherman Village Apartments. The complex, located on the 126000 block of Riverside Drive, is facing poor conditions which has resulted in tenants complaining to the landlord and to the property management.

According to reports, three days before the victim’s body was discovered, a resident heard screams and yells for help at approximately 3 am. This resident contacted the apartment’s security and also called the police. Footage released by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) shows a man, the suspect, roaming the halls of the apartment building shortly before 3 am attempting to get into units. According to the LAPD, the “suspect unlawfully entered the victim’s apartment and a physical altercation ensued, which resulted in the victim’s death.”

Tenants say that they continue to see transients roaming the halls of the building. Only four days after the victim’s body was found, footage showed a man carrying a trash bag over a shoulder in the halls of the second apartment building. More recent security footage (from May 6th) shows a man with a bicycle, who has been confirmed not to live in the building, roaming the halls of the apartment complex and walking into one of the stairwells at 3:41 am. Just a few minutes later, the same man is seen still roaming the halls, although captured on another resident’s camera.

Tenants of the apartment complex are concerned about safety and the lack of building security. Reportedly, apartment management has failed to address issues that have existed in the building even before the murder. They claim that management has not fixed broken exterior doors or done anything to prevent transients from getting access to the roof. The only thing management has done was to hiring what they refer to as “courtesy patrols.” Still, transients continue to be spotted on doorbell footage in the early morning hours.

Unfortunately, by failing to take action to prevent transients from trespassing onto the premises of the apartment complex, the property owner and the property management are putting tenants at risk of suffering harm at the hands of trespassers. If you or a member of your family suffered injuries because your apartment complex was unsafe, you could have grounds to file a lawsuit. In fact, residents may join together to file a class action lawsuit.

The Responsibility that Landlords and Property Owners have towards Tenants

When we think of the responsibility that landlords have to their tenants, we usually think of the Warranty of Habitability; this states that landlords must keep their rentals in habitable condition for their tenants. In general, this refers to making sure that common areas are clean, that there is running water, that windows and doors keep the weather out, that the roof does not leak, etc. However, when the apartment complex is located in an area with a high crime rate or with a high transient rate, other measures must be taken – including having secured gates, appropriate lighting, surveillance cameras, and even on-site security. When an incident occurs, it is essential that landlords increase security and immediately fix any issues (like gates that don’t lock) to reduce the risk to other tenants.

In the incident discussed above, tenants had complained about the lack of security in the apartment complex before the murder occurred; therefore, residents could have grounds to file a lawsuit against the property owner.
