Fatalities Confirmed after Private Jet Crashes into San Diego Neighborhood liability lawyer attorney compensation incident accident

Breaking News: a private jet crashed into a San Diego neighborhood during foggy weather in the early hours of Thursday, May 22, 2025. The crash set about 15 homes and a number of vehicles on fire and forced the evacuation of several blocks, according to authorities.

Although the number of people aboard the aircraft is unknown, officials have confirmed multiple fatalities. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Cessna 550 aircraft went down at approximately 3:45am near the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in Murphy Canyon; the community of Murphy Canyon is a military housing community.

San Diego Police as well as other first responders rushed to the scene where they battled flames fueled by jet fuel. Assistant Fire Department Chief Dan Eddy stated the following in a news conference: “We have jet fuel all over the place. Our main goal is to search all these homes and get everybody out right now…When it hit the street, as the jet fuel went down, it took out every single car that was on both sides of the street. You can see that every single car was bruning down both sides of the street.” Later, authorities confirmed that no residents of the community required any hospitalization and that all fatalities were aboard the private jet.

According to a flight tracking site, a Cessna Citation II jet was scheduled to arrive at the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive airport at 3:47am from the Colonel James Jabara Airport in Wichita, Kansas. According to officials, the aircraft could hold 8 to 10 people.

The incident is being investigated by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Can I File a Lawsuit after a Cessna Crash?

Yes, if you sustained injuries or if a member of your family died in a Cessna crash, you could have the right to file a civil lawsuit for personal injury or wrongful death, respectively. Who can I sue? What type of claim can I pursue? This is based on the specific details surrounding the incident. For example, if the plane crash occurred because there was a mechanical issue present in the aircraft due to a lack of maintenance, then the owner of the aircraft and the pilot (or the pilot’s estate) could be liable and could be sued. If the plane crash occurred because a defect in design or manufacturing present in the aircraft, then the plane manufacturer could be liable and could be sued; however, a plane owner or pilot could also be liable for knowingly operating a defective aircraft. When it comes to incidents caused by poor weather conditions, liability can be difficult to establish. However, if the incident occurred because a pilot recklessly chose to operate the plane in bad weather, then the pilot could be held liable. Similarly, if the operator of the plane forced the pilot to operate the plane in bad weather, then the operator could be liable (whether this is a private transport company, a tour company, or another entity). In general, these lawsuits are based on negligence, although some claims could be based on product liability or breach of contract/warranty, for instance.
