On December 28, 2023, JoyBuy Marketplace Expressed issued a recall (number 24-071) for their Relax 5mm Science Kit Large Hematite Magnetic Stornes Building Blocks. This recall affects over 4,200 units. Reportedly, the product does not meet federal safety regulations, as the sets contain one or more magnets that fit into the Consumer Product Safety Commission\u2019s (CPSP) small parts cylinder and have magnets that are stronger than what is allowed. Because of this, the magnetic balls can potentially be swallowed, attract each other or other metal objects and get lodged in the digestive system; this comes with a risk of perforations, blockages, and twisting of the intestines, infections, blood poisoning, and death.<\/p>\n

The recall includes the 5mm magnetic balls, which are neodymium rare-earth magnets with a strong magnetic flux. They were sold in sets of 216 multi-colored magnetic balls (the set included a clear plastic case, a portable tin storage box, and a black storage bag).<\/p>\n

The recalled magnetic balls were available online at Walmart,.com from February 2022 through April 2023 for between $14 and $15.<\/p>\n

No injuries\/incidents have been associated with this specific product. However, the CPSC estimates that there have been up to 2,400 magnet ingestions treated in emergency rooms from 2017 to 2021. The agency is aware of seven deaths caused by the ingestion of magnets.<\/p>\n

The company is urging consumers to stop using the magnetic balls, take them away from children, and contact them for a pre-paid label to return the product and get a full refund. For some, this might be enough; however, consumers that suffered harm should not settle for just a refund. Affected consumers could have the right to receive compensation if they file a lawsuit for the harm suffered \u2013<\/a> whether it was injury or death.<\/p>\n
