Revel started in 2018 offering shared electric and dock-less mopeds in Brooklyn. Later, there service areas expanded to Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and other U.S. cities. Earlier this year, Revel launched an e-bike service (specifically, a monthly subscription) in New York City as well as made an announcement of plans for a charging station for electric vehicles in Bed-Stuy. According to the founder and CEO, Frank Reig, the company\u2019s mission has always been to \u201celectrify cities.\u201d Therefore, it is no surprise that Revel announced an all-electric rideshare service using all Tesla vehicles; the service<\/a> is starting in Manhattan, but will likely expand through major cities in the U.S. relatively soon.<\/p>\nAbout Revel\u2019s All-Electric Rideshare Service<\/span>\n

The rideshare service has been set to launch in late May. It will consist of a fleet of 50 Tesla Model Y vehicles, all branded by Revel. The service will start in a specific zone and then expand to other neighborhoods based on demand and data, similar to how they started their e-moped service a few years ago.<\/p>\n

How will this service be different from other rideshare services? Besides being all-electric, Revel is highlighting an important difference \u2013 they will be employing all of their drivers rather than depending on gig economy drivers. What does this mean? If all drivers are employed, then the company can ensure that their drivers have the appropriate training to drive passengers around. In contrast to other rideshare services, Revel will own all their vehicles, which will allow them to keep track of acceleration, speed, and breaking of the vehicle. Reig claims that \u201cevery single driver [they] employ and train will be getting safety scores at the end of every shift so they can improve their driving.\u201d Ultimately, this allows the company to \u201clower insurance costs and liabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most rideshare companies require that their drivers, which are independent contractors, carry their own insurance coverage; this is in addition to the insurance coverage that the rideshare services provide in case of an accident on an active ride. Since Revel is going to hire all their drivers, their drivers will not be required to carry their own insurance policy. According to Revel, drivers are fully covered, and their \u201cTeslas are all registered and insured according to local regulations allowing [drivers] to drive hassle free.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n

\nYou Don\u2019t Need Insurance<\/span>\n

As explained above, Revel will be providing insurance coverage for all their drivers<\/a> because they will be hired as employees; therefore, employees will not be required to have their own rideshare insurance. Typically rideshare accidents are only covered by rideshare insurance<\/a> when the accident occurs during an active ride; however, since Revel drivers will be employees driving vehicles owned by the company, any accident should be covered.
