The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating an accident that involved a Tesla vehicle that crashed into a fire truck engine on the 405 freeway. The driver told the firefighters that the car was on autopilot during the time of the collision. The zero-emissions car hit the back of the fire truck while it sped down the highway at an appropriate 65 miles per hour, on Monday. There were no injuries reported, but one day later, federal investigators had become involved. The crash occurred when the Tesla bumped into the fire truck which, at the time, was responding to a downed motorcycle incident. The driver claimed that the car was on autopilot at the time of the crash. Autopilot is a feature of the Tesla that, as its website claims, is “full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver.” There have been other crashes involving the self-driving feature that the NTSB says that people are relying too much on the computer. Tesla has already made a number of changes to their self-driving program to better handle the invariability of the human driver, as well as to make it safer. Tesla currently classifies its self-driving feature as “driver assistance system,” which means that it still relies on its human driver. Tesla reported saying that, “Autopilot is intended for use only with a fully attentive driver.”
