About Rancho San Antonio Boys Home

Rancho San Antonio is a non-profit organization; it is a residential agency that provides different services to adolescent boys after court orders. Rancho San Antonio Boys Home was founded in 1933 by the Catholic Big Brothers. It started as a rental home in Redondo Beach providing services for just 18 boys. Just a few years later in 1938, Rancho San Antonio Boys Home relocated to Chatsworth, California. Over the decades, the boys home has helped thousands of young men.

Since the 1950’s, majority of the funding for Rancho San Antonio has come from the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal service. This funding that led to a total of eleven living units, a dining hall, a gymnasium, an infirmary, a recreational complex, sports fields, a group home, a career resource center, and an administrative building. As of late, the boys home provides services to over 100 boys and their families.

In the past, there have been multiple reports of sexual abuse from the adolescents getting services at this establishment.

Child Sexual Abuse – A Common Issue in the Catholic Church

Unfortunately, child sex abuse remains a very common issue in the Catholic Church. Reportedly, about 55% of priests accused of sexual abuse had at least one formal allegation of abuse made against them. Over 25% of all accused priests have two to three allegations of abuse against them. Over 17% of these priests had four to nine allegations made against them. Almost 4% of accused priests had ten or more accusations against them. In addition to the sexual abuse committed by priests and other members of the Catholic Church, there has also been plenty of coverups, many of which have come to light in the last few decades.

The Devastating Consequences of Child Sexual Abuse

The Rancho San Antonio Boys Home serves male adolescents (children under 18 years old) who are troubled and have a history of delinquency. The facility is supposed to be a safe place for these troubled teen boys to get the services that they need to essentially turn their lives around and start fresh. Instead, these boys have been subject to sexual abuse.

Without a doubt, there is significant harm that can occur as a direct result of the sexual abuse. This can include the following: sexually transmitted diseases, internal injuries, injuries to reproductive organs, scrapes, bruises, etc. In addition to this physical harm, sexual abuse can also lead to depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, fear, etc. The mental and emotional harm resulting from sexual abuse can be catastrophic – especially in adolescents who were already troubled in the first place. Unfortunately, victims of child sex abuse are at greater risk of resorting to drugs and alcohol; they are also at greater risk of committing suicide.

I was Molested or Abused at the Rancho San Antonio Boys Home. What Are My Rights?

If you were the victim of sexual abuse, you could definitely have grounds to file a lawsuit. You can sue the Catholic Church, and you could be entitled to recover a significant amount of compensation. What if the sexual abuse that you suffered occurred years or even decades ago? Depending on the time that has passed since you were abused, you could still have the right to file a lawsuit under California law.

California Law Regarding Child Sex Abuse

In October of 2019, AB 218 was signed into law. AB 218 extends the statute of limitations (or deadline to sue) for victims of childhood sexual abuse. The law came into effect January 2022. What does this mean? If you suffered sexual abuse when you were at the Rancho San Antonio Boys Home, you could still have the right to sue, given that one of the following conditions are met:

  • You are under 40 years old (as victims of child sex abuse have 22 years after their 18th birthday to file a lawsuit)
  • You discovered or should have discovered within the last 5 years that you suffered psychological harm as an adult due to the childhood sexual abuse

It is important to remember that the deadline that applies will always be whichever is later.

Additionally, AB 218 creates a “lookback window” which gives victims three years from the date that the law was passed to file a lawsuit even if they had previously been barred from filing by a statute of limitations.

Most importantly, AB 218 gives victims the right to be awarded treble (3x) damages in cases where the defendant covered up the abuse. Considering how common coverups are in sexual abuse cases involving any sort of Catholic establishment, you are likely to be awarded up to three times the damages if your lawsuit is successful.
