USPS Dog Bite Statistics for Mail Carriers
Recently, the United States Postal Service (USPS) released information regarding mail carrier dog bites. While delivering mail, carriers can encounter many dangers, which can include hazardous weather and even hazardous conditions on the sidewalks that they walk on every day. However, a more constant hazard is the countless dogs that they encounter on their routes. Any dog will bark at a mail carrier; however, barking is not an issue – biting is.
According to data released by the USPS, over 5,300 mail carriers were attacked while on the job. Of course, unrestrained and unsecured dogs pose a risk to mail carriers. However, even dogs that are behind a fence can jump up and bite mail carriers as they are trying to complete their mail deliver (as mail carriers have to put their hands near the mailbox).
The USPS released information on the cities with the highest number or reported mail carrier dog attacks in 2022. The city with the most mail carrier dog attacks was Houston, TX with 57 dog attacks. However, Los Angeles, CA was ranked second with 48 dog attacks in the year. In addition to Los Angeles, other California cities that made the list include San Diego (39), San Francisco (19), Long Beach (16), and Stockton (16). In fact, California has ranked as the worst state of USPS dog attacks for the second year in a row. In 2022, there were 675 mail carrier dog attacks in California – up from 656 in 2021.
The USPS is urging the community to be responsible dog owners and secure their dogs, whether this means leashing them or putting them inside, while the mail is being delivered. Unfortunately, these dog bite incidents continue to happen. Mail carriers that find themselves injured after a dog bite attack can file personal injury lawsuit against the dog owner, the homeowner, and in some cases their employer.
