Six Dead After Florida Nursing Home Loses Power Following Irma | 9-13-2017
According to a statement by city officials in Hollywood Florida, at least six nursing home residents have died. The deaths may have been caused by the loss of the rest home’s air-conditioning after Hurricane Irma hit the city on Sunday. The cause of the deaths is still under investigation. The nursing home, The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood hills, released a statement that confirmed that the home had a “prolonged power failure to the transformer which powered the facility’s air conditioning system as a result of the hurricane.”
Three were pronounced dead at the scene, while three others died after being transported to Memorial Healthcare System facilities. Firefighters evacuated 115 people from the nursing home. Others were found in critical condition, while some had trouble breathing. 18 patients in an adjacent behavioral health facility are also currently being evacuated. As a cautionary measure, the authorities are checking the other 42 nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the city of Hollywood.
The hospital has established a hotline, 954-265-1074 so that the families of nursing home residents can check in on their loved ones. According to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, there are a total of 683 nursing homes in Florida with over 84,000 beds. There are also more than 3,100 assisted living facilities with over 99,000 beds.

DTLA Client Review
“Farid was great! My boyfriend and I retained him in April 2017, as we were rear ended on the I101 . Our car was totaled and we were badly injured. On a family member’s recommendation, we took a chance and contacted Farid for help with the process. After the whole ordeal, the last thing we wanted to do was deal with insurance companies.”
