Permanent Brain Injury Statistics in the United States:

  • Unless a brain injury is caused by birth, it is classified as an acquired brain injury (ABI) and is divided into 2 categories:
      • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) – Open or closed head injuries caused by accidents, assaults or anything that damages brain tissue
      • Non-Traumatic Brain Injuries (NTBI) – Caused by strokes, vascular accidents, tumors, viral infections, hypoxia or toxic products
  • Falls are the leading cause of Traumatic Brain Injury. Rates were highest among  the youngest children aged 0 to 4 and seniors aged 75 and older
  • Motor vehicle–traffic accidents are the second leading cause of TBI (17.3%) and resulted in the largest percentage of TBI-related deaths (31.8%).
  • 1.7 million TBI-related emergency department visits take place in the United States, hospitalizations, and deaths occur each year in the United States
